PHOENIX – Arizona Diamondbacks CEO Mike Hazen is physically absent from work while his wife Nicole is dealing with brain cancer.

Hazen said on Friday he would continue regular talks with CEO Amiel Sawdaye, who will host the daily baseball operations. Hazen, 45, has been a Diamondbacks GM since 2016.

Hazen’s wife Nicole has been treating brain tumors for over a year. The couple has four sons.

“First of all, I want to say that Nicole is doing well,” Hazen said. “He grinds with him. But because I’m realistic on our journey we’re on right now, knowing what my job requires, and knowing what’s most important to me, this requires a percentage of my time that starts to creep into my ability to do (my job) here physically.”

He later added, “I had to be honest about where I needed to be physically more often than not.”

Diamondbacks President Derrick Hall said he supported Hazen’s decision and is pleased that Hazen is spending time being with his family. Hazen and Hall said there is no timetable for GM’s return.
