Andy Robertson has said the Scottish captain will mean everything to him as he prepares to lead his party’s Euro 2020 Group D inauguration against the Czech Republic.

The Liverpool defender is the first man to lead the country in a major tournament since Colin Hendry did it at the 1998 World Cup in France.

Robertson is honored in front of 12,000 supporters in Hampden Park on Monday afternoon and wants to praise the attitudes of the players he plans to captain at the European Championships.

“There aren’t many captains who have done it. Apparently we haven’t been to many tournaments. Being the captain of my country means everything to me,” he said. Sky Sports news.

“It makes it even more special that I captain this group because for a man I have a lot of time for them outside the park, they’re a fantastic group of boys.

“No egos, nothing, just an honest, good team. Leading them out means everything.”

Robertson was part of the Liverpool side, which experienced fans back to the stadium after the final two matches of the Premier League season, when a coronavirus pandemic had forced most of the campaign to play behind closed doors.

Hampden is limited to 12,000 capacity for the Czech Republic match and Scotland’s final group stage match against Croatia 22. June, but Robertson said this too will provide a significant boost to Steve Clarke’s players.

“It makes a huge difference,” he said. “The Premier League players managed to get the fans back to the last week of the season. It made a huge difference, of course.

“Football without fans is nothing. In the last few months, you’ve really seen this happen for a variety of reasons.

“Football is not football without a full stadium. It’s not full, but it’s a good start to what the world had to deal with, and getting 12,000 in Hampden will make a huge difference.

“I’m sure those who are lucky enough to get there are excited and hopefully they can cheer up the team.

“I think the country will get right behind this team and hopefully we’ll feel it.”

Robertson acknowledged that Scotland and the Czech Republic have less imagination to move forward from Group D than England and Croatia, making Monday’s match even more important.

“We’re both probably going downhill going into a group with Croatia and England, but both teams want to prove the wrong people who think we’re going home,” he said.

“That’s why the first game is difficult. All three group competition games are crucial in different ways, but you want to start well.

“Everyone in the tournament wants to get the first three points on the board.

“We’re trying to get three points and that would put us in a really good position, especially for the England match [on June 18].

“We’re ready to get started, and our job is to show all the qualities we’ve shown over the last two years to get us here on the big stage.

“Looking at the training and lineup right now, I think we can do it.”
