Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen received a medical resuscitation when he collapsed on his side during a Euro 2020 football match on Saturday and was later conscious in the hospital.
The game was originally suspended, but will resume at 1830 GMT, European football chiefs said.
After 42 minutes, Eriksen suddenly found himself completely free on the right wing, when a counterattack by Denmark caught their opponents by surprise. Teammates Martin Braithwaite and Thomas Delaney rushed to help him, and Delaney furiously called for medical help.
As silence collapsed over a crowd of 16,000, Eriksen’s teammates formed a ring around him as doctors pumped his chest just before Half Time in a Group B match.
Audiences at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen sang the national anthem and shouted “Christian Eris” while waiting for news on the player.
The game’s Reuters photographer saw Eriksen raise his hand as he was transported from the field on a stretcher, and the stadium announcer later told the audience that he was taken to a nearby Rigshospitalet.
The Danish DBU football association tweeted that the 29-year-old was “awake and at Rigshospitalet for further investigation.”
The news that Eriksen had been taken to the hospital was greeted by the audience singing his name.
Both teams later left the field with officials holding blankets to hide the injured player from view, and the stadium announcer told fans the game had been suspended due to a medical emergency and to stay put.
The game was scored without the collapse of Eriksen, who played club football in Inter Milan, Italy.
