Ground hockey first appeared as a men’s competition at the 1908 Olympics. Until 1928, sports were on and off the Olympic calendar because there was no proper sports structure. It took almost 70 years before women’s hockey was introduced at the Olympics when it appeared at the 1980 Olympics.

The ground sand to be held at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 will take place from July 24 to August 6, 2021, with 12 teams of men and 12 teams of women taking part in the games.
