RALEIGH, USA – Don Haddell, president and CEO of National Hockey Leagues Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team has signed defender Eric Gelinas on a one-year two-way deal. Gelinas will earn $ 750,000 at the NHL level and $ 100,000 at the American Hockey League (AHL) level in 2021-22. The contract comes with a $ 125,000 guarantee.
Eric is a veteran defender with NHL experience, Waddell said. He had a strong season in leadership positions in Sweden last year, and adding him will help strengthen the depth of our defense.
Gelinas, 30, scored 34 points (8g, 26a) in 46 matches with the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) Rgle BK in 2020-21. He finished fourth among SHL defenders, and the +22 rating placed second in the league. Defending 64, 216 pounds, the defender has skated 90 in his career in SHL games since 2019 and earned 56 points (14g, 42a). He also played 52 games for the Continental Hockey League with Slovan Bratislava in the 2018-19 season, when he scored 15 points (5g, 10a). Gelinas scored 55 points (14g, 41a) in 189 NHL career matches with New Jersey and Colorado in 2013-2017. He also spent time in the American Hockey League (AHL) with Albany, San Antonio and Laval in 2011-18, recording 102 points (39g, 63a) in 236 AHL career matches. Gelinas led all AHL defenders with 16 goals as a newcomer in 2011-12. Prior to his professional entry, he earned 133 points (31 g, 102 a) in 244 matches with Lewiston, Chicoutim and Saint John in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). He also wrote 12 points (5g, 7a) in 19 playoffs in 2011 to help Saint John capture the Presidents Cup and Memorial Cup. Vanier, Ont., Native was selected in the New Jersey second round, 54th overall, in 2009 NHL draft.
