Vols cruise on LSU 15-6, sweep the tigers in the Super Regional

The Tennessee attack jumped against 15 (!!!) runs LSU In the Knoxville Superarea decision-making game, and the Vols head for Omaha College World series for the first time since 2005.

UT made at least one run in six games out of nine innings and placed six points in fifth. This mid-game boom added touch to the previous 5-2 lead and essentially changed the close game to a blow.

Tennessee, Liam Spence and Max Ferguson’s typically deadly 1-2 strokes struggled with a combination of 0-8 discs. But Jake Rucker, Jordan Beck and Connor Pavolony carried the offense with eight hits and 10 RBIs.

Rucker, who had two doubles last night in a 4-2 Vols win, hit early with a two-stage explosion in the first match (video below) and then touched LSU starter Landon Marceaux again to get a solo shot in the third.

Future Major League Baseball right-wing field player Jordan Beck, who went in a combined 0-8 game against Wright State and the first competition with Liberty, has officially risen from his mini-routine. He went 3-5 today with this three-stage banger on the left field. See how Becks waves here, it’s absolutely beautiful.

Today’s offensive performance was a collapse for Evan Russell as well. Russell had only hit two hits after the SEC tournament and had not found a home round after the Tennessees match against Alabama 28. May. But fortunately for Vols, LSU threw him a quick ball, and Russell did to this quick ball what he does to many quick balls: he made it leave the ball field in a hurry.

UT numbers The nine-winger, Connor Pavolony, had also been struggling since the end of the Tennessee regular season SEC schedule. He only had four hits after that Bama game in late May, and three of them came to Wright State. Pav got two hits, three RBIs and three points.

LSU used seven pitchers to get through nine innings, of which five guys went one or less. Marceaux wasn’t as sharp as he had been for most of this season and gave three earned two earnings, while the next three hurlers LSU tried together to give up seven runs for the Vols bats.

Tennessee overtook older Will Heflin and started freshman Blade Tidwell, which seemed a little weird to me. But, Tidwells has been a Sunday starter all year, even though he typically rose in the third game of the series. Since the Vols didn’t play on Friday, Tidwell ended up on Sunday as usual, but composed this Super Regional in his second game in an atypical spot based on the normal turn of the year.

Anything was really wordless, but Tidwell got the ball in the series and wasn’t quite the best. His fast ball rose to 97 from what I saw, but his secondary breaking height strengthened and weakened. Overall, Tidwell gave up six runs (tied for the worst of the season) and seven hits while he hit seven and walked anyone. He is one of his best curves in the game, an 82 mph ball that slammed into the record and ended the LSU match.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m not trying to be critical. At the end of the day, Tidwell surrendered fewer runs than his attack offered and gave Vols seven innings. I’ll take it.

The win of the day, made in a Tennessee sweep against LSU in the Knoxville superarea, was calculated to get a fifth copy against the Tigers this year in five trials.

UT heads to Omaha to study World Series for the first time in 15 years. That 05 Vols team included potential MLB players like Julio Borbon, Luke Hochevar, Chase Headley and JP Arencibia.

CWS begins June 19 and lasts, give-or-take for 10 days. After this writing, Vanderbilt and Stanford are the only two other teams that have secured their place in Omaha.
