Six Tar Heel field players have added a new glory to an already successful school year. Bryn Boylan, Erin Matson, Abby Pitcairn, Meredith Sholder, Eva Smolenaars and Cassie Sumfest has been named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Team announced by the league on Monday.
They were all part of the NCAA and ACC championship teams last year, with Tar Heels finishing 19-1.
Boylan graduated in May with a major in media and journalism. Midfielder / striker from Doylestown, Place, he scored six goals, including three game winners, in 2020-21.
Rising senior major in media and journalism, Matson is a striker from Chadds Ford, Pa. He was recently announced as the winner of the Honda Sports Award for the second year in a row.
Pitcairn, a rising senior specializing in biology, is a midfielder from Pittsburgh, Pa. Winner of the 2019 Elite 90 Award, he played in all 20 matches last season and placed six assists.
Sholder, also a rising parent and major in biology, is a striker / midfielder from Alburtis, Pa. He ended the season with three goals and three assists and earned the first team’s All-South honors.
Smolenaars, the main producer of media and journalism returning during the fifth season, is a midfielder from Weert, the Netherlands. He earned his first team with All-ACC and All-South honors in 2020-21.
Sumfest, who has completed his degree in business administration and will start graduate school in the fall, is a midfielder from Paew Lewisburg. He started all 20 games in 2020-21, with a total of 14 points out of six goals and two assists.
Six Tar heels are among the 38 conferences to earn the honor, taking into account both academic and athletic performance in the 2020-21 season.
The minimum academic requirements for All-ACC’s academic team selection are a previous semester average of 3.0 and a point average of 3.0 during the academic career. The sporting achievements of the latest season will also be taken into account when selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all student athletes in the conference with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
