When the NJSIAA boys ’tennis semifinals begin Wednesday afternoon in Mercer County Park in West Windsor, they will have the top four seeds and a match between two non-public programs that know each other well.
Delbarton advanced two players to midfield, and top-class Michael Zheng won his semi-final battle against Tenaflys Alexander Merson on Tuesday, in the second quarter, 6-3, 6-4 and third with John Walentowicz. against Ramapos Lucas Choi, who also seeded in the second four 6-0, 7-5.
This puts the match for Walentowicz to Newark Academys runner-up Nicholas Kotzen, who won 6-0, 6-2 from Millburns Matias Feol, who was fed up with 9-16, 6-0, 6-2.
All Wednesday matches start at 2 p.m.
Newark Academy and Delbarton finished in the latest NJ.com Top 20 magazine, released May 28 just before the start of the NJSIAA Champions. Newark Academy has concluded the Delbartons teams season through the last three races, the C of C events in 2018 and 2019 and the non-public finals this spring.
This will provide some extra motivation for Delbarton in the tournament, which will give players a new chance to championship when the team season is over.
I think it was definitely difficult, Delbarton assistant coach Patrick Savidge said of the Green Waves team’s season, which ended with a CC Newark (Academy) finish. for us, so this has been a nice return when both guys did a semis tournament in individual tournaments. It’s something our team can hang hats on and be proud of, even though maybe as a team we didn’t get that far, now we had two guys at the party.
Walentowicz, who said he faces Kotzen in junior tournaments, met Sam Goidel all three times that Newark Academy and Delbarton met during the team leg of the season. Four to four seed Goidel dropped Montgomerys fourth to Eric Li on Tuesdays in the quarters, 6-2, 6-2.
We definitely have a really deep list, Walentowicz said. I’m really proud of how hard we worked this season. This was our goal, and we achieved it, so we want to keep digging.
Li will face Zheng in the second semi-final. Neither of these players competed when Montgomery and Newark Academy played on May 1st. Li is invincible this season, and Zhengs lost a lone defeat to Kotzen, which he also won twice during the team season.
In a four-game, half of the draw remained unchanged by seed, and the other half, which had already been dropped, was further dropped.
In the disrupted half, the Chathams sowed the seeds of Ryan Sordillo and Oscar Jaroker by winning again, defeating Tenaflys Luke Han and Andrew Kim, who seeded another four, 6-4, 6-4, together on Tuesday in the quarterfinals. The Chatham pair face East Brunswicks Dhaivik Chenem and Nathan Bernadskii sown in Group 9-13 after Chenem and Bernadskii defeated Hillsboroughs Rithvik Akella and Sid Bharani-Dharan, who were sown in the second four, 6-0, 6-3.

Kotzen, who then worked with Andrew Zabelo, defeated Burns and Kelly 6-2, 6-3 in last week’s NJSIAA Non-Public final, while East Brunswick and Chatham did not meet during the team season.
The winners of the semi-finals will return to Mercer County Park on Thursday at 2 p.m.
