Head coach: Matt Nagy. I really want Nagy to work on Bear. As Bears fans (this is coming up again), I personally wanted Nagy to get a job during the job search that led to his hiring in 2018, and I still believe he can be a long-term answer to this franchise program. After all, Saints coach Sean Payton thought enough about playing Nagy steal the play that Chicago ran in the playoffs against New Orleans. Nagy has led the team in the playoffs in two of his three seasons at the helm.
I also understand why some Bears fans are still demanding Nagy’s dismissal after last season. Not only did he finish 8-8 in his second second year, but the offense is kind of absorbed. Don’t forget: When Nagy was hired, he had a reputation as an offensive genius. But Chicago ranked 22nd or worse in points and yards in both 2019 and 2020. It rose to the top ten in both categories in 2018 (ninth in scoring). Have you ever watched a game in the Trubisky era when the Bears were behind and thinking of yourself, Yeah, Mitch can gather a team here? No. You never did.
Here comes the part where I play the peacemaker: While Nagy was unable to fulfill his original mission to make the former No. 2 general choice as a top-class QB, he made get into the playoffs twice with Trubisky, which can be as impressive as, for example, winning the Super Bowl with Tom Brady falling from the sky. Not quite, but close. And you could argue that getting Trubisky to become QB1 is hard to judge Nagy fairly fairly. But Trubisky is gone when he has signed a backup of Josh Allen in Buffalo, and Nagy is away for excuses. He has to prove he is the coach I believe he is. It’s like when I finally updated my golf clubs. I could no longer blame them for my terrible shots – everything was on I. I’m sure Matt will meet the challenge. (And it doesn’t matter that Bears has a quarterback.)
Quarterback (for at least one game): Andy Dalton. You sit there late at night looking for something to watch on TV, browse all the channels, clear your options on Netflix and Amazon Prime, and finally settle down Friends? It is not Office, but it’s not terrible – a perfectly fine placeholder for practicing the mind until it’s time to go to sleep. It’s an offseason signee in this situation: not quite what you’re looking for, maybe starting to show his age, but still decent enough. And Nagy just repeated that Red Rifle QB1.
We think we probably all want newcomer Justin Fields to open in the middle of the season, but when it comes to choosing the first round, it’s like when we first heard rumors about legitimate Defenders of justice Snyder cut. You wanted to see it so bad, but you also didn’t want to rush it until it was ready. Meanwhile, the Bears can move in with 33-year-old Dalton, a good quarterback who can win games in the right situation.
Estimated MVP of 2021: Eddie Jackson, security. As exciting as things can be in QB and attacks, there’s a lot of psychiatry in defense. Much of this starts with recently promoted defense coordinator Sean Desai, a disciple of Vic Fangio. Bear fans will no doubt hope the defense can return to where it was in 2018, Fangio’s final season with the team, with Chicago finishing first in allowed points and third in the defensive game. And Desai is going to do it, saying they want to perform “tuning” and “make sure players play to their strengths consistently and they buy into the system and why and why we do certain things.”
It is exactly what the bears need. I know a lot of people say that Chicago needs to get something out of the huge free agent Robert Quinn who signed last year, which, to put it mildly, didn’t work very well. While Quinn was working towards a quiet 2.0 sack, the guy he replaced, Leonard Floyd, killed it with the Los Angeles Rams. But for me, the biggest need is to play Eddie Jackson the same way he did in 2018, when he earned first-team All-Pro medals with six selections, two forced releases, a sack, and three defensive contacts. Hopefully the jersey will change to number 4 and this “tuning” in defense philosophy will help Jackson restore the shape that made him one of the best in the game.
Star of the year 2021: Darnell Mooney, wide-receiver. Well, Darnell has already come across the heads of at least two major defensive players. Prove the lengths which ram corner Jalen Ramsey went to last month to let Bears fans know how unbearable he was defending Mooney’s move against Ramsey last season. And then also Packers Security Darnell Savage got hurt by some fansalso. Chicago certainly hopes that the Fifth Round of 2020 will provide even more fuel for e-commerce between Bear supporters and opposing DBs this season.
