Oklahoma football belongs to selected teams that legally have a real chance to compete in national championships – this year or any year.
Each university team starts the year with a dream to play a championship. For everyone, with the exception of about a dozen schools, however, a conference or division championship is as far away as their hopes or dreams can realistically achieve.
In reality, only teams that are constantly recruiting at the highest level of ability have a real chance to play in college football championships.
Some of you may be familiar with the “Blue-Chip Ratio” of the university football concept. If not, this is the term. Soon fans will be interested to know about it.
The Blue-Chip Ratio is a gauge designed by Bud Elliott from 247 sports which measures the number of five- and four-star recruits – or “blue chips” – in a particular team’s recruitment classes for four years. This figure is compared to the number of three- and two-star recruits in the previous four years.
He has found that the teams that win the national championship in college football are the teams that recruit more four- and five-star recruits than the two- and three-star during the previous four signature classes.
Another way to say this is that teams with less than 50 percent blue chip entries during the previous four recruitment periods cannot be considered a national competitor for Elliott’s blue chip.
Oklahoma’s Blue-Chip ratio for 2021 is 66 percent, placing them fifth with LSU and Texas, among the top 16 teams with a realistic chance of a national championship this season.
Again, what this means is that the number of five- and four-star recruits in Oklahoma’s last four recruitment categories was 66 percent of the total number of entrants in the last four periods.
Alabama (84 percent), Georgia (80 percent), Ohio (79 percent), and Clemson (67 percent) rank Sooners ahead of Elliott’s 2021 Blue-Chip Ratio calculation.
Sooners ’BCR position has grown over the past two years. The ratio of OU chips in 2019 was 60 percent (11 out of 15); in 2021, Oklahoma was 63 percent in 2020 (exactly one-fifth of 16).
When you look at the 16 schools whose blue chip ratio exceeded 50 percent compared to the previous four recruitment categories, it’s usually the same grouping you see among the top 15 schools in the recruitment category ratings each year.
It’s good to see that the two big 12 schools rank higher in this year’s BCR rating. While Texas seems to be a departure from the theory that the more five- and four-star recruitments you have, the better your chances of winning a national championship.
Excluding Texas ’2021 recruitment class, the Longhorns have averaged 9.75 in the previous four 247Sports national recruitment class rankings. Over the same period, they have finished at most N. 15 in the final College Football Playoff list and will remain in the top 25 of the final CFP in two to two years.
Bottom line: Oklahoma is doing a much better job of developing the top talent it brings. This is further demonstrated by the fact that the OU has won six consecutive Big 12 championships. The average conference final in Texas over these six years is 4.17.
