Cameron Norrie joined the British tennis king by reaching the finals at the Queens Club. The 25-year-old is one match away to get his first ATP title after winning the 7-5, 6-3 semi-finals from his second seed, Denis Shapovalov.
The only other Britons to make it to the Queens Finals in the last 40 years are Tim Henman and Andy Murray, and Murray is the only one to raise the title after World War II.
It hasn’t sunk yet, Norrie admitted. I think I played very, very well today and I’m so happy to make it to the finals. I can’t really describe it, it’s nice to get over the line. It’s a huge tournament for me. I couldn’t be happier with myself.
British No. 2 started nervously when two double errors and two forced errors gave Shapovalov an opening game. But Norrie took a break from love and then took a tight first set with a gorgeous hand down the line that left the Canadian behind him.
Shapovalov, who had to finish the rain-suspended semi-finals against Frances Tiafo earlier in the day, needed left-foot care at the start of the second series. Another Norrie rear-end winner in the eighth game summed up the decisive break.
World number 14 was powerless to prevent Norrie from claiming another major scalp in this wonderful season, which has been a wonderful season so far. He has now won 29 matches this year, more than any other tour player except Russias Andrey Rublev.
On Sunday stands, like the British, Mattio Berrettini, the largest serving world No. 9, who was Murray and Dan Evans this week.
The Italian have not yet dropped a set with their Queens debut and have won their last 30 service games when he swept aside Australian Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-4 in the first semifinal.
Ive followed him all week, he has tremendous service, he is one of the best players on the tour at the moment, Norrie added.
I can chat with Evo and Andy and see if they have any tips. I saw him play earlier today and he had a really good day. It’s not going to be easy.
