A member of the Ugandan Olympic team was tested positive for the coronavirus when he arrived in Japan and was denied entry to the country in the first known COVID-19 case among teams traveling from abroad to the Tokyo Games, government officials said on Sunday.
The team member, who tested positive when he arrived at Narita Airport outside Tokyo on Saturday night, was part of nine members of Ugandan athletes who competed in boxing, weightlifting and swimming, as well as coaches. Eight other members traveled by bus on Sunday to their host city, Izumisano, in the western prefecture of Osaka, Japan.

The Ugandans are the second group of athletes to arrive in Japan for the Tokyo Games, after the Australian Australian softball team arrived in Japan for the pre-Olympic camp on June 1st.
An unidentified member of the team had received two doses of the vaccine developed by the British AstraZeneca Plc and sent a negative test result within 72 hours of departure.
According to a representative from the host city, all members of the Ugandan delegation are fully vaccinated.
“We are asking eight members to refrain from training for a while, to demand daily testing, and to ensure strict infection prevention and control practices so that we can send them safely to the games,” said Izumisano Mayor Hiroyasu Chiyomatsu.

Meanwhile, Takashi Nishi, the chairman of the hotel where the team lives, said the hosts are “suppressing themselves” and doing their best to support the East African nation’s delegation.
Team members got off the bus with their national flag, waved to reporters, and set themselves up for photo opportunities.
Team members whose arrival was delayed by three days due to an increase in COVID-19 incidents in Uganda are scheduled to train at Izumisano and nearby Kishiwada until July 19 as they prepare for a pandemic-delayed Olympics as open on July 23.
Also on Sunday, 14 members of the Danish rowing team arrived at Haneda Airport, which became the third group of foreign Olympics to land in Japan. The team will head to its host city of Ogatan in Akita Prefecture and will remain there until July 18th.
Team members are tested for PCR every day and their movement is restricted.
Later this month, the Singapore table tennis team is scheduled to land in Japan and set up camp in Shimada, Shizuoka Prefecture, starting June 27th.
