CHAPE MILLIONFifth year senior at the University of North Carolina William Blumberg has won the ITA Rafael OsunaSportsmanship Award in 2021, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced on Monday.
The ITA Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award is the ITA Longest Award. It honors the Division I male student athletes who demonstrate athleticism, character, excellent scientists and have had excellent playing achievements.
The award was established in 1969 in memory of Rafael Osuna, who was killed in a scene accident at the age of 30. Osuna is one of the greatest collegiate tennis players of all time. part of the USC team, considered by many to be the largest in history
Blumberg’s name is synonymous with athletic excellence in the college tennis world, but his work outside the field is equally impressive. The triple team captain is a regular visitor to the UNC Hospital Children’s Oncology Center. He takes the time to visit both fans, teammates, coaches and opponents.
Blumberg is regularly recognized for his athleticism. Last season, UNC nominated him as Mildred McCaskillAward for excellence in athletics, research and community service. He is also the only 10-time ITA All-America in history.
Blumberg is the second Tar Heel player to win the award when he joined Roland Thornqvist, who won it in 1992 and 1993.
