The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has repeatedly urged various national sports clubs to look for other ways and means in preparation for the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi in November.
Commissioner Ramon Fernandez, a cook missionary in the Hanoi-based Philippine Department, said the Sports Agency already had a training budget proposed by national safety authorities competing for 39 of the 40 sports over the years.
I almost fell out of my seat, said Fernandez when he saw an amount of 184 million PK, covering only 28 NSAs.
The Philippines won the SEA Games host competition in 2019. It appears to be placing 626 athletes in Hanoi in its bid despite a strong podium despite the pandemic.
28 national safety authorities submitted their budgets for bubble training, and it was already 184 million PK. The PSC has only two hundred million budgets for SEA games, Fernandez said during a forum presented by San Miguel Corporation (SMC), MILO, Amelie Hotel Manila, Braska Restaurant and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Industry (PAGCOR).
The PSC cannot fund all this. One national supervisory authority asked for five million and we have thirty-nine national safety authorities. Baka mag-Bangka tayo going to Vietnam. We also need national security authorities to step up operations and look for LGUs (godfathers) to help them with facilities, billing and food.
Some are done, while others are looking. Less than 20 national security authorities using host LGUs. The PSC cannot meet all financial requirements during a pandemic, the former basketball superstar said at a smart-powered session where Upstream Media was the official webcast partner.
So far LGUs from Ormoc (fencing and modern pentathlon), Dumaguete (archery), Zamboanga (weightlifting), Baguio (Muay), Benguet (kickboxing), Taguig (table tennis), Ilocos Norte (volleyball) and Tagaytay (cycling) Bohol, Cebu and Sta. Rosa Laguna.
Fernandez said he kept his fingers crossed that the Hanoi SEA games would run through as planned and on schedule. He said the agency is waiting for the final word from the SEA Games Federation. It has been reported that the Vietnamese government is considering postponing the event until July next year due to the pandemic.
We’ll cross the bridge when we get there, said Fernadez. He then added that so far, preparations for the Tokyo Olympics are all in place.
But in the same way we are ready. “
