His victory is achieved just 15 days after he was forced to withdraw after the third round of the commemorative tournament with a six-shot lead when he was positive for the coronavirus.
“I think the biggest setbacks are going to get some of the biggest breakthroughs, and I think a lot of people believed or thought I was angry at the situation as I actually was,” Rahm told CNN Sport’s Don Riddell.
“I’ve never blamed anyone. I’ve never been sorry for anything, I can’t control these things, and we’re in the middle of a pandemic.
“I’ve had a lot of loved ones and a lot of friends suffer and even die from this, so my first thought was,‘ I hope it doesn’t get worse, my health doesn’t get worse, and I hope no one else in my family, especially my two-month-old son, has it. ‘
“That’s where my mind was. When everyone else got a negative result, I stayed mentally positive knowing that good things were coming. I’m a great karma believer and I stayed really positive knowing that something was going to be good.”
A special place
Even before Sunday’s victory, Torrey Pines was of particular importance to Rahm.
In addition to being his favorite city, San Diego was a place his wife Kelley loved before they met when his family used to vacation there.
According to Rahm, Kelley did indeed disappear for him on Monday in the qualifiers for the Farmers Insurance Open when they met, even though he had no idea about golf.
Torrey Pines was also his first PGA Tour win when he won the Farmers Insurance Open in 2017.
Rahm suggested to Kelley on the trails of Torrey Pines, referring to their “favorite spot” on the track after he had won the US Open on the track.
“Every time we come to feel relaxed, we are naturally happy no matter what happens,” he explained.
“And including the two of us, including my parents, it’s not negotiable for them, this is usually a date on the calendar that they never miss, nor his parents.
“And the fact that they were able to be here for this too later in the year and make it happen – it makes it so special. That’s why I said there was something special in the air today and I believed it.”
This big win is probably even sweeter for Rahm after the recent arrival of her son Kepa.
His victory also on Father’s Day – Rahm’s first father – it was a fairy tale for a couple of days for a Spaniard; one that is closed on a family trip to Ken’s sushi workshop to celebrate.
“To be here with him, to be my first victory as a father, to be here with him here and to be there at the age of 18 with Kelley to walk with him [Kepa] in his arms, at that time everything that happened around me just disappears, “he said.
“And what I have done and what I will do in the future, it doesn’t matter what they matter to me and how much I love them.
“So I tell him constantly, no matter what I achieve in my life and what happened around us this afternoon, he was still the most important thing and will forever be.
“And I don’t know if he’ll ever understand the greatness of this moment for myself and us, but I’ll try to make sure he understands.”

Rahm had to win a tough race to get his groundbreaking big win, a bunch of former champions and rising youngsters in his tail.
With his first major in the bag and behind the golf world as the first, Rahm is now hungry for more.
“This first one is a big load on your shoulders,” said the 26-year-old. “Especially once you’ve reached number one in the world, playing at a high quality level like I have in recent years, you’re put on the‘ best ever to win the main list ’very quickly. I wanted nothing more than to get off the list as early as possible.
“And I think because of what happened a couple of weeks ago, I had an excuse. I had a little excuse in case I played poorly – I had Covid, I couldn’t practice, I wasn’t ready, it ‘s the US Open – blah, blah blah.
“I became a different attitude, and not that I expected to win, but I just went out, played the best possible golf and played an amazing first three rounds and today all this was combined into a great day.”
