Mangesh Mopkar leads table tennis matches at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. An experienced referee is the only Indian to perform his duties as a technical official in postponed summer games.
Indians are closely following table tennis events at the Tokyo Olympics. As many as four Indian paddlers have gotten into quadrennial games for the first time. Sharath Kamal, Sathiyan Ganasekaran, Manika Batra and Sutirtha Mukherjee represent the country in the Tokyo Games.
The Tokyo Olympics will be held from July 23 to August 8, 2021. Table tennis events are scheduled to begin on July 25. Blue Badge judge Mangesh Mopkar will leave for Japan on July 20th.
International referee Mangesh Mopkar was selected as the referee for major table tennis events based on his excellent record. Mangesh Mopkar has handled nearly 30 international tournaments over the past decade, ten of which were overseas.
Nagpur-based Mangesh Mopkar was India’s first choice for this position. The 59-year-old explained the selection procedure when speaking exclusively to Sportskeeda. He said:
The Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee asked the Table Tennis Association of India (TTFI) to provide two names, one man and one woman, and their experience from the last five years. The data includes performance and evaluations of international events during that period. Based on my good experience, TTFI appointed me. No official performed the surgery. “
Mopkar began officializing international TT tournaments in 2011
Mopkar began officeing at international TT events in 2011. He has been able to maintain his blue mark position thanks to his knowledge of the rules of the game. A Technical Officer may participate in the Olympics only once due to the policy of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).
The ITTF has decided not to send an official twice for major events such as the Olympics. Because the event happens every four years and if one person goes multiple times, the others have no chance. Like athletes, the Olympics are also a unique opportunity for all officials in their lives, said Mangesh Mopkar, who bought VRS from the Reserve Bank of India in October 2019.
Organizing the Tokyo Olympics in the midst of a pandemic is a challenging task for everyone. All players and officials traveling to Japan must follow the strict guidelines set by the Organizing Committee.
