A conversation between coaches Nichole Treadway and Kelli Braley led to what could be a new annual charity tradition for senior New Hampshire high school field hockey players.
When Vermont withdrew from Twin State Senior Field Hockey in April, Londonderrys Treadway and Souhegans Braley decided to create an in-state parenting game for the benefit of the Dartmouth-Hitchcocks Norris Cotton Cancer Center in Manchester.
The New Hampshire Field Hockey Coaches Association East-West Senior game will be held on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Souhegan High School. Treadway and Exeter coach Deb Grott leads Team East and Braley and Keene coach Michelle Tiani Team West.
Treadway said Vermont decided in April not to play Twin State because many of its teams did not play in the midst of pandemic uncertainty last school year. The Twin State game was also canceled last year.
We really wanted to do something for the girls, said Treadway, who is president of NHFHCA. Kelli came up with something to do for charity, just to make it fun and introduce some of our seniors, keep the tradition of keeping the game alive.
Each Team East and Team West player participating in the game on Saturday was required to raise at least $ 100 for the Norris Cotton Cancer Center. The combined increased amount was nearly $ 4,000 on Tuesday, Treadway said.
Londonderry midfielder Emily Cowette, who plays for Team East on Saturday, said she reached her $ 100 goal within 24 hours after she made a Facebook message asking friends and family for donations.
Admission to the game is free and donations are accepted at the door.
Treadway said he and Braley decided to benefit from the Norris Cotton Cancer Center because of its ties to the New Hampshire field hockey community. The annual Playing for a Purpose hockey jamboree in August raises money for the center.
Playing for a Purun Jambore was created by Manchester Memorial alumni and twin sisters Jenna and Kelly Freitas. Their mother, Christine, who was first diagnosed with melanoma at Norris Cotton in 2002, is now hosting the event.
After holding virtual challenges that Treadway said it raised about $ 6,000-7,000 last August due to the pandemic, Jamboree is scheduled to return to its 10th this summer on Saturday, August 28 at the Memorial.
Christine Freitas will be on the game on Saturdays and Jacorsnn Rodriguez, director general of friends at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, will speak at half time.
It made sense that it was for our charity and just continue it, Treadway said. Christine is a special part of our field hockey family in New Hampshire. When we can help her and help the cancer center is really special.
In the state game, each New Hampshire high school national hockey team was allowed to nominate a parent to participate in the show. Some coaches nominated traditional MVP-like players, while others nominated based on the sport, Treadway said.
Treadway said players will arrive about two hours before Saturday’s game to explore and practice.
Cowette, who will be running at Purdue University this fall, is looking forward to meeting friends he hasn’t seen in a while and playing another game before ending his field hockey career.
I’ve decided not to play in college, so I thought our last playoff game against Windham was my last game, Cowette said. I’m excited to get on the field and play one last time.
Cowette said he wants the East-West game to continue as another option for older field hockey players.
Treadway said he and other high school coaches want to make it happen.
I think we have every intention of continuing this in some way, Treadway said. We have a really strong association and we definitely try to do our best to support the girls in the best possible way and give so many opportunities. I think this is something we all really want to continue.
