The New York Jets will sign Morgan Moses for a one-year deal, sources confirmed to ESPN on Friday.
The 30-year-old Moses, who was released by the Washington football team on May 20 as a wage rate, will compete with current George Fant in a real fight.
Not only does the Jets get a proven starter in Moses, it adds to their depth and flexibility. If Fant loses to Moses, which is a likely scenario, he could be vice president.
This is the second aggressive move by CEO Joe Douglas, who emphasized the importance of building one of the league’s worst lines of attack.
Douglas used his 2020 first-round selection in left-wing Mekhi Becton, and he followed by using the 2021 first-round selection for Alijah Vera-Tucker, who reflects the team’s early guard. The Jets liked Vera-Tucker so much that they swapped nine seats to take him.
The Jets had planned to ride with Phant – $ 4.45 million of his $ 8.5 million salary is guaranteed – but they changed course when Moses became available. They hosted him on a free agent visit.
“Morgan is a great player. He has played at a very high level,” coach Robert Saleh said recently. “We’re not going to avoid adding good football players.”
The rigging depth is important. Becton, a fighting plantar fasciitis, left most of the offseason program. He was injured in the first practice and remained on the sidelines. Saleh downplayed the injury, saying he was “not worried about his availability” to the training camp.
Still, Becton’s weight and endurance are a concern as he left a similar number of five games last season due to various injuries. When he was healthy, he was sometimes dominant.
Moses (6-foot-6, 330) is one of the most enduring linemen in the league. He has started all the games since 2015, all but one in the right place.
In 2020, he finished 39th out of 62 qualifiers in a pass block win percentage, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Fant finished in 40th place.
The Washington football team cut the two-year contract for Moses. He was set to earn $ 7.75 million in 2021. Moses, the third-round pick from Virginia in 2014, has played 104 games, including 97 starts.
The Washington Post first said Moses signed with the Jets.
