Max Verstappens won the Styrian Grand Prix for his view, which looked increasingly ruthless. After Verstappen had opened the opening from the start, he held the lead without any problems, faster on straight lines and around corners. Mercedes team leader Toto Wolff acknowledged that his team had no plans for significant improvements to this year’s car, but focused all resources now constrained by a budget constraint on brand new design to meet the new regulations for 2022.
Hamilton insisted that if he was to stay in battle, Mercedes would have to change its priorities. We need some kind of update, he said. We’re not sure if it’s the rear wing or the engine, but we need to find some kind of performance somewhere.
Verstappen, on the other hand, confirmed that Red Bull continues to develop the car passionately, noting that they brought improvements in every race and would continue to do so.
Hamilton reacted by issuing a stern warning, which certainly meant as much to his team as to anyone. We will continue to push, we are world champions and we can certainly improve if we put our minds into it, he said. But if we are not going to develop and improve our cars this year, this is the result you are going to see.
He also hinted that he was not going to simply accept this situation. Naturally, we would like updates and improvements, I don’t think it’s on the cards right now, but of course we’ll discuss that, he added.
Hamilton has not been under such pressure for some time. He hasn’t won four races now, his longest unbeaten run since he went to six races that lasted in late 2017 (especially after he won the title) and the 2018 opening. In 2017, he had 20 points for Sebastian Vettel in the nine laps of the season before starting an unruly six wins in eight races when Mercedes comprehensively overtook Ferrari. The problem for the world champions is that there was no budget ceiling then and no new car that could be built from scratch. There are no signs that the team can repeat such a turn this time.
Red Bull has now been at top speed at low speeds and proved its car on two high-speed tracks in a row. Their low-voltage rear wing maintains top speed on the straight, but their car’s Aero makes sure it doesn’t lose anything at corners.
Verstappen reported that his ride had been on fire and that it was the best he had enjoyed all year. The car was very comfortable to drive, I really enjoyed it, he said. Clearly the difference is yes, but the car’s balance was the best so far this season.
His joy was understandable. Verstappen did not give up his cord at any point by holding it through the Napa and through the holding stops. Hamiltons race engineer Peter Bonnington had admitted to lap 55 that they were helpless. What should I do? asked Hamilton to end the eight-second gap. The options only fight for tire pollution, admitted the only hope of the divorced Bono that the Verstappens rubber would fade.

More licks waiting. The Austrian GP will be held on the same track next weekend, and Mercedes has no miracles in stock or even to be expected. Hamilton has serious questions that need to be answered, while Verstappen is in every position to leave the mountains just as seriously.
