PORTSMUTTI – Portsmouth has so much to show when it comes to people visiting the area. This September, they will have the opportunity to do so. The Ohio Senior Olympics have selected Portsmouth’s Southern Ohio Senior Games (SOSG) to host state games in Portsmouth.
SOSG board member Gina Collinsworth said she will be holding SOSG concurrently with the Ohio Older Olympics State Games on September 11 and 12, 2021.
The SOSG government is excited to host the host country games, but also looks forward to the Portsmouth Senior Games being re-organized this year as they were unable to do so last year due to the pandemic. Collinsworth said this is a great way to show people the good things in the area. Most of the older games are held at Portsmouth High School in their athletics area.
Collinsworth said they have members on the SOSG board who are also members of the state board. SOSG coordinator Lyvette Mosley had the idea from the start to bring board members together and it has become her passion.
“The government thinks this is a great way to introduce our area,” Collinsworth said. “People, people, are inspiring, and it’s a great way to stay active and fit.”
People over the age of fifty can compete in games. They have volunteers who come and help, especially during athletics games. Collinsworth shared that the South Webster High School athletics team will help.
“Those kids love to come and help because they love athletes and love to interact with older athletes,” Collinsworth said.
The SOSG board is a volunteer board, and they also have other volunteers for the games. Those interested in volunteering can access the Southern Ohio Senior Facebook page and message the organization.
The Senior Olympics began in Ohio in 1979. The games have grown over the years, but the purpose has remained the same – to promote healthy lifestyles and exercise for Ohioers aged 50 and older and to provide high-quality sports competition.

It should not be forgotten that there are also 5K and 10K races outside of athletics.
