Alabama Crimson Tide is tightening future football schedules

Nick Saban has long been the sole supporter of nine conference games in the SEC. He has also preached the gospel of all Power 5 teams that only play Power 5 teams. The 2020 season showed the entertainment value of both scenarios.

College football fans have shown their cupcake exhaustion against opponents of non-Power 5 and FCS. The most obvious forms of fans are less capacity seating and early departures from such matches on game day. Yet Saban has continued to schedule – and strangle these fewer teams. The belief was that he didn’t want to be the only one who took the risk of scheduling. However, the Alabama coach may have achieved near-perfection in what he calls the process, and is now ready to set an example.

FINAL KICKOFF CLASSIC

This season’s inauguration against Miami in Atlanta marks the last neutral Kickoff game for Crimson Tide in the near future. Alabama is 10-0 in these one-off games (11-0 if you count Alabama’s 16-10 loss State of Ohio in 1986, the Kickoff Classic played at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ). Each of these games that Bama has played under Saban has resulted in a double-digit victory.

In 2010 and 2011, Alabama took home-home both ends with Penn State: 24-3 in Tuscaloosa and 27-11 in University Park, PA. Such two-game series are the future of Alabama football.

CHANGE IN THE SEA

Saban and Grab Byrne, Alabama’s director of athletics, are leading the change in college football. Of the other teams in the conference, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina had already followed this form of the two non-conference Power-5 games to some extent due to their annual competitions with the ACC teams.
