Tanya Snyder has joined her husband Dan Snyder as CEO of the Washington Football Team.

The franchise announced Tuesday when she became one of the few female leaders in the league’s history. He is also with franchising shareholder Dan Snyder. The Snyder family bought the franchise program in 1999.

“Tanya is one of the key figures in the organization, and that has only come true in the last 18 months as her involvement has deepened,” Dan Snyder said in a statement on the news. “Publicly, many are aware of Tanya’s incredible and impressive work in breast cancer skills and leadership for our charities. But behind the scenes, she has had a profound impact on the Washington football team. She was instrumental in our decision to develop the brand and modernize our fan experience – including entertainment.”

She joins Amy Trask (Oakland / Los Angeles Raiders) and Kim Pegula (Buffalo Bills) among the NFL history women leaders.

Amy Adams Strunk took on the role of controlling owner of the Tennessee Titans in March 2015 and serves as chairman of the board of the franchise company.

Tanya Snyder has been the director of the Washington Football Charitable Foundation since 2000 and founded the “Washington of Women” fan club in 2011. Breast cancer survivor Tanya Snyder also helped launch the NFL’s “Think Pink” campaign in 1999.

“This team is our family’s legacy,” he said in a statement. “We are at a key moment in the history of this team as we work to become the NFL franchise gold standard. The CEO names demonstrate our approach to this effort. It is a natural step forward, but it is important to formally recognize the diversity of opinions and perspectives that tell us everything we do. I can ensure that the core values of our charity permeate the entire organization and bring us closer to achieving our goals. “

The Snyder family gained complete control of the franchise agreement in March when NFL owners unanimously approved their purchase of the remaining 40.5% of the Washington football team from the franchise’s minority owners.

Washington is in the midst of a brand that has decided to retire its previous name last summer. It has not yet settled on the new name or logo, but for the 2022 season it will be permanent. It will continue this season as the Washington football team.

Washington is also still the subject of an independent investigation by attorney Beth Wilkinson over several allegations of sexual harassment made by former employees over the past 15 years, which the Washington Post reported last summer. The investigation is still ongoing.

In February, the team reached a deal with their former cheerleaders, who appeared in unfair videos made without their knowledge in the swimsuit-calendar photography stages in 2008 and 2010. The franchise also announced it had suspended its cheerleader program in the midst of rebranding in February.

The organization sought to improve its culture over the past year. Its actions include hiring Jason Wright as the NFL’s first black team president and Julie Donaldson as senior vice president of media and the first woman to be part of the NFL team radio broadcast.

Reuters participated in this report.
