High school boys ’tennis returned in style this spring.
When 2020 was canceled due to a pandemic, The Marlboro team continued where it left off, winning the Shore Conference team tournament, defeating Rumson-Fair Haven in the final. It lost its second straight Mustang conference title when they conquered the SCT crown in 2019.
The crown of the Ocean County tournament went to Toms River North for the third time – sweeping the Mariners swept all five flights, while RunnerupPinelands had finalists in four places – and Marlboro won the Monmouth tournament, while Rumson-Fair Haven was second.
And in the NJISAA teams ’tournament, Point Beach came out of the South Group 1 championship.
Here are the 2021 All-Shore teams:
FIRST team
BRADEN CHAVEZ
School: Ranney
Year: Freshman
Highlights: Chavez won the Monmouth County Tournament’s first singles championship by defeating Red Bank Regional’s Jake Cohen 4-6, 6-1 (12-10 in a tiebreaker). Chavez went 13-3.
JAKE COHEN
School: Red Bank Regional
Year: Senior
Cohen advanced to the fourth round of the NJSIAA doubles tournament after being moved to the 9-16 range. He also advanced to the final singles final of the Monmouth County Tournament. Cohen went 20-2 this season.
MAX LUSTGARTEN
School: Rumson-Fair Haven
Year: Senior

Lustgarten advanced to the fourth round of the NJSIAA doubles tournament after seeing in the 9-16 group. Among their victories in the state tournament were 6-3, 6-4 Marlboron Vasista Linga in the third round. He led the Rumson-Fair Haven Shore Conference Tournament and the NJSIAA Central Group 2 final. He won his first 13 games of the season and finished 17-2; all of his 17 wins were straight series, including wins from Ranney Braden Chavez, Holmdel’s Brandon Hu and CBA’s Jaden Vigner. Lustgarten announced earlier this year that he plans to continue his tennis career while studying at Wesleyan University in Connecticut.
KYLE MELIA
School: Rumson-Fair Haven
Year: Senior
Melma, the second doubles champion in the Monmouth County tournament, had one of the biggest disruptions in the state tournament when he gathered to beat Summit Brendan McDonald in a 2-6, 7-5, (10-5 tiebreaker) second round. sown in the range 5-8. Melia was then defeated in the third round. He defeated Holmdel’s David Menna 6-2, 6-2 in the MCT’s second doubles and went 16-1 in the season.

VASISTA LINGA
School: Marlboro
Year: Senior

Highlights: Linga advanced to the third round of the NJSIAA doubles tournament before being defeated by Lustgarten. He also had two victories at Christian Brothers Academy’s Jaden Vigner. Linga went 11-1.

JADEN VIGNERI
School: Christian Brothers Academy
Year: Senior
Vigneri advanced to the second round of the NJSIAA doubles tournament by defeating Millville’s Jacob Lewis 6-1, 6-1. He also swept two matches for second team selection Brandon Hu against Holmdel, including a 6-3, 6-3 win when CBA and Holmdel met in the Shore Conference tournament. Vigneri went 16-5.
