Jerry Keefe was chosen Wednesday to succeed Jim Madigan as the Northeasterns men’s hockey coach, the school announced. Keefe served as a long-term assistant for 10 seasons under Madigan, who at the end of this season resigned as head coach to become the school’s sports director.
I am excited to have the opportunity to take our hockey program to a new level, Madigan said in a statement. He has been a dedicated loyal coach and a member of the Northeast community. I am excited to look at his future and see how our program grows and develops under his leadership.
Keefe, a native of Billerica and a former Matignon High actor, spent the last seven seasons as NU’s assistant coach, helping the Huskies in three live Beanpot championships, three NCAA tournaments, one Hockey East title.
Over the past decade, a total of eight Northeast players earned All-American honors, with power racing number one in Hockey East at nearly 27 percent last season, led by Keefes.
Thanking NU President Joseph E. Aoun, Chancellor Kenneth W. Henderson, and Madigan for the opportunity to fill the hockey field as the 11th Fern Flaman staff ice coach, Keefe said in a statement: This is my dream coaching job and I am excited to build on the great culture we have created 10 within the year.
With his dog in the Northeast, Keefe was selected as coach for the U.S. national team team 2018-2020, which helped the U.S. team win a silver medal in 2019. During the Junior World Championships, Keefe worked with other Huskies Tyler Madden (LA Kings). ), Cayden Primeau (Montreal Canadiens) and Jordan Harris (Montreal Canadiens sketch selection).
Prior to the Northeast, Keefe established himself as a prominent name in New England team hockey and stopped as assistant coach at UMass Boston (2006-07) and head coach at Westfield (2008-09), before his two seasons. assistant coach at Brown University (2009-11).
He awakened the Westfield State Hockey Program and led the owls to second place at the Massachusetts State Sports Event (MASCAC) for the first time since 1981.
Keefe, who served for four years at Providence College (1996-2000), ended his career at Friars with 98 points (30 goals, 68 assists) in 102 career games and was awarded New England’s Most Improved Player (1998-99). He spent five seasons playing professional hockey in the AHL and ECHL before playing for a couple of seasons in Europe before retiring in 2004.
