Preview of ACC Football 2021: Quarterback

Welcome to July! And with that, the previews for the Syracuse Orange football season are now still full as we add these previews of the venue as well. Also, thanks to some timing errors, for my part in the spring, you get the back of your opponent’s previews and these, too, start. Have fun anyway for you, even if not the person who writes three previews a week right now.

Anyway: We talked about Syracus quarterback earlier this week. So now it’s worth diving into how this group rises against other ACC passers-by.

In recent years, the best performers

Apparently Trevor Lawrence was good enough at Clemson to get himself elected No. 1 as a whole. In his younger year in 2020, he threw 24 taps and nearly 3,200 yards and added another 203 yards and eight points on the field. Indeed, North Carolina’s Sam Howell had more bypassing contacts (30) and yards (3586) in his sophomore campaign for Heels, even though Lawrence didn’t win.

These players were two of ACC’s six QBs to cross the 2,500-yard mark. The others were (in order): Our Ladys Ian Book, Miami DEriq King, Louisvilles Malik Cunningham and Boston Colleges Phil Jurkovec. Just outside of this number was Pitts Kenny Pickett, who is still effective and started the Panthers feeling like the tenth straight year despite real highlights that fans can’t show.

Who will succeed in 2021?

When all this success is maintained, you will think that there will be a lot of turnover. And yet its fair Lawrence (draft) and Book (graduation, Notre Dame returns to independence) are the main names at the door. This leaves Howell next spring for a pile trial of his choice of No. 1 if he repeats a production similar to what he has already seen in his first two seasons (more than 4,200 passing yards and 68 TDs).

King should have an excellent campaign in Miami, and the same goes for Cunningham in Louisville, as he has had much of the line of recent years and a skilled running game the previous year. While Jurkovec may not have accelerated last year (numbers, however, at times), his own line situation should set him well at least to repeat running totals from 2020. One discussion of the upcoming season of college football would not be complete without noticing Clemson and QB DJ Uiagalele. To Lawrence’s relief last year (including a lot of time compared to both BC and ND), he threw 914 yards with five touches and zero picks.

Top three units: 1. North Carolina, 2. Miami, 3. Clemson

We mentioned Howell above, but you can’t say enough how good he looked for two years. This readiness for the professional game should usher in a new season for Mack Browns ’UNC revival project, unless the threatening draft eventually disrupts something we don’t predict, but it can certainly happen from the time it happened to others in the past. Even outside of Howell, Drake Mayes has recently been selected as one of the top 100. There is a lot of talent in the position of Tar interest rates.

DEriq King’s pick-up from Miami last year paid immediate dividends and fixed what has been a sensitive spot as the program is still officially back. The sticks have been knocking on the door lately. However, the dynamic game of Kings in the middle can get them there. It was a throw between Clemson and Louisville in third here, as the ranking of both depends heavily on the starter. Hardly went with the Tigers because Uiagalelei is a better player. But both have depth issues in QB.

Three lower parts: 12. Syracuse, 13. Virginia Tech, 14. Duke

The appearance of the Syracuses here should come as no surprise, given that no QB has launched all of the Orange games since 2018, and even then it was the first event since 2012. Also discuss SU in the last section.

Despite the problems with oranges, Virginia Techs is potentially in a tougher spot. Hendon Hooker moved to Tennessee, and Braxton Burmeister didn’t really seem to have enough (687 passing last yard last year) to boost true self-confidence. Dukes added plenty of quarter builders in recent years ’recruiting classes and lost last year’s starter Chase Brice to the Appalachian state. Their QB situation is a bigger issue than Syracuse at the moment, believe it or not. But the level of talent in the midst of uncertainty may run out by the end of the year.

Where is Syracuse Located?

As mentioned, Syracuse comes in 12th, and you can also place them below Virginia Tech if you think the above is frustrating for Burmeister. Orange has three player lists, and players started the college game with Tommy DeVito, JaCobian Morgan and State of Mississippi transfer to Garrett Shrader, which is more than many teams can say. It does not guarantee, of course, that any of them will be as effective at the entry level. But the experience at least gives some depth and more options to the coaching staff that is approaching the hot spot.
