Moscow, July 2 / TASS /. Russian football, hockey and basketball teams showed unsatisfactory results in 2021, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko said after a meeting on Friday attended by Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin.
“Our football performance in the European Championships, the hockey team’s loss in the World Cup semi-finals, the loss to the Mexican basketball team in the Olympic qualifiers are not the results our taxpayers and government would like to see. salaries, non-transparent selection criteria – all these problems require immediate action, “Chernyshenko said in a comment to his press service to TASS.
At his annual question and answer session on June 30, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that the poor performance of Russian hockey and national football teams in recent international tournaments required change, including staff restructuring.
At the IIHF (International Hockey Federation) World Championships hosted by Riga, Latvia, from 21 May to 6 June 2021, the Russian team failed to clear the quarter-finals of the tournament.
This month, in the 2020 UEFA Euro Cup, the Russian national team failed to figure out the group competition for the tournament. The Russian football team has put together their European Championship tour and placed in the Group B basement with three points after three matches. The team started their 2020 Euro Cup campaign with a 0-3 loss against Belgium and a 1-0 victory over Finland – both matches were played in St. Petersburg, Russia. Nevertheless, they lost to Denmark 1-4 in Copenhagen on the night of June 21st.
During the Olympic qualifiers in late June – early July, the Russian basketball team lost to Mexico (64:72) and Germany (67:69). The team finished last in the group and did not make it to the playoffs.
