Five things to watch
Here are five great story lines we follow on Road America.
1. Although Hendrick Motorsports stumbled a bit compared to its recent tubes during the Pocono Raceway dual title, it is highly unlikely that all four drivers would not compete for victory on Sunday. Chase Elliott is NASCAR ‘s newest road surface king, but Kyle Larson is right to attack. Elliott and Larson have won the last 1-2 road races. Elliott won the Circuit of The Americas, while Larson arrested his teammate for the Sonoma Raceway victory. Alex Bowman is in the top ten of all three road races so far this season, while three William Byronin this season, the top five rankings among the top ten have come for road courses.
2. There will be four Cup Series drivers on the field this weekend who have won the Xfinity Series races in Road America – AJ Allmendinger, Christopher Bell, Austin Cindric and Michael McDowell. Of these drivers, Allmendinger and Bell have seen the most success in Cup Series road racing this season. Bell won the Daytona Road course when Allmendinger finished seventh in Daytona RC and fifth in the Circuit of The Americas. All four may be ready to steal the show on Sunday. McDowell is in the top ten in two of the three road races this season.
3. After seven races in the regular season, three drivers have scored a significant number of points in the playoffs during the last four races. Kurt Busch has scored 86 points in a bubble during the last four races and is three points above the line, Daniel Suarez placeholder has scored 54 points and is 48 points back on the line. Bubba Wallace has scored 41 points in the last four races and is 54 points below the bubble.
4. At the top of the spectrum, the regular season championship is warming up with Larson and Denny Hamlin. Between the two drivers sat more than 140 points on the regular season table after the Cup Series at Darlington Raceway on May 9th. But in seven races, Hamlin is now only two points ahead of the hottest driver in the Cup series. Larson has won four races this season so far, while Hamlin’s No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing team has not yet broken into Victory Lane.
5. Kurt Buschin and Ross Chastain is a bit foggy after this week ‘s news that the Trackhouse Racing Team will be using Chip Ganassi Racing’ s funds at the end of the 2021 season. According to rumors about the Silly Season vortex, Trackhouse Racing Team owner Justin Marks says Suarez will continue to drive No. 99 in 2022, leaving one more seat to grab another car. Marks showed that Busch and Chastain are the two best candidates for the trip, but nothing is in the rocks yet.
