During their first three years in college, Harrison’s Connor and David Griff proved to be a huge tandem in doubles, but they continued to collide and lose to potential Episode 1 and state champions.
It was frustrating, but it also gave them the reassurance that they could hang out with the best.
When the COVID-19 pandemic displaced all spring sports in 2020 and took away their junior season, the Griffins returned for the final season as seniors. This time they are not banned.
They got together and left everything on the court on their way to the double title of Episode 1.
“After a few weeks of digesting and taking it in, it feels good to end up from above,” Connor said. “It’s been our goal to win and also as a senior. Our time at Harrison has been amazing and I wouldn’t change anything about it. Coach Quan (Huynh) is an amazing coach and made our experience even better.”

Boys tennis:New Rochelle Grantcharov, Harrison’s Griff Brothers Win Episode 1 Titles
For their perseverance and mastery of the championship on the field, the Griffin brothers are Journal News / lohud Westchester / Putnam boys tennis players of the year.
“It’s an incredible honor,” David said. “After playing on the university team for many years, winning this award is an incredible achievement and is very rewarding. Doing it alongside my brother is even more special. We have played together for years and for both of us this award is a huge honor.”
They defeated Horace Greeley in a pair of Jason and Jack Wei championships in early June, 6-2, 6-1. They went through the tournament game without losing a single set.
“What makes us a successful team on the field is the relationship,” Connor said. “We know what works best and what doesn’t. This allows us to use our strengths and perform at the highest possible level.”
Both were relatively late bloomers in the sport and parents who are avid fans of the sport became acquainted with tennis at around the age of 10.
They changed their baseball gloves to a tennis racket and started competing a couple of years later. They quickly fell in love with the sport, and it seems to have been the right choice.
The two brothers anchored Harrison in the singles doubles and also experienced success in the regular season. Together, they were an unstoppable force in duel.
They go to college in their own way, but they have a tennis racket with them.
Connor is committed to playing at Hamilton College. David is studying at Vanderbilt and plans to join the club tennis team there.
“It was a phenomenal end to my high school career,” David said. “We’ve loved playing every minute at Harrison University since eighth grade, and we’re sure to lose it. Harrison tennis has given us so many opportunities, and we can’t thank Coach Quan enough for all his support and coaching over the past five years.”

School: New to Roche
Year: Junior
Vitals: He dominated the resistance in Sections No. 2 as a seed, running into the 1st episode single to the title without giving up one set. He won the championship of his teammate and close friend Nick Suhanitsky, 6-3, 6-4.
Max Kalinin
School: Mamaroneck
Year: Freshman
Vitals: The embarrassed freshman battled his way to third place in the cuts, beating Somers ’Hudson Schantz, 6-1, 6-2.
Nick Suhanitski
School: New to Roche
Year: Junior
Vitals: He secured Section No. 1 for the sectors and reached the finals where he finished second to Grantcharov.
Doubles
Jack Wei / Jason Wei
School: Horace Greeley
Year: Senior; Second year student
Vitals: A scary tandem, they made it to the Episode 1 doubles finals without losing a single set. In the end, they finished second in the Griff brothers in the championship match.

School: Mamaroneck
Year: Junior; Freshman
Vitals: They gave the Griff brothers a close fight in the first set of their semi-finals, but eventually lost. They were able to group third in the match in the cuts, defeating Byram Hills Bailey and Jesse Goldstein 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

School: Byram Hills
Year: Senior; Second year student
Vitals: The Bobcat brothers enjoyed a great run to the semifinals of Part 1 and fourth place.
Coach of the Year
Jen Rock, New Rochelle: While some elite players from other schools did not play high school in the absence of a season state tournament and other COVID-19-related factors, Rock was able to persuade Grantcharov and Suhanitski to continue as well. They were the first two seeds in a Episode 1 doubles tournament and dominated their way to the final, where Grantcharov rose as the winner of the entire Huguenot championship match.
