The Illinois spring season ended with the first aftermath of the Illinois High School Association in more than a year, including the boys ’tennis court finals in Chicago.
Here are the winners of the boys ’tennis prize at the 2021 Central Illinois High School Sports Awards, which will begin among the player of the year and finalists at the June 30 online prize show. The rest are in alphabetical order.
Brian Lelm, Metamora
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: The older all-time player achieved 17-2 in singles and 32-2 in singles along with other finalists Harry Hawbakers to get second state Class 1A. Mid-Illino’s two-handed and cross-country champion also helped Redbirds rank third as a team across the state in the program’s first state trophy. He plays tennis at St. Ambrose.
Harry Hawbaker, Metamora
POY FINALIST: The senior all-stator went 14-2 in doubles and 35-4 in doubles, along with POY Lelmi to get second place nationwide in Class 1A and to help the Red Birds third on the team. Mid-Illini conference champion in the second duel and block winner Lelmi in the duel. He plays tennis at Coe College in Iowa.
Bryton Short, Metamora
POY FINALIST: The second student went in doubles 24-4 and doubles 20-6 and had six Metamora players in the state finals, going 3-2 there and finishing in the top 24. Master.
Kyle Braker / Connor Loudermilk, Morton
The senior duo went 18-10 this season, including 2-2, and reached the top 32 in the Class 1A state finals. The duo finished third at Dunlap Sectional and were named the second team at the Mid-Illini Conference.
Caleb Brinkman, Richwoods
The methodical junior went 11-2 overall, the only two losses in the cross-sectional championship and eventually to Class 1A state champion Max Braun of the Champaign Centennial. His speed and consistency led him second in the Big 12 conference, second in the title and 3-2 mark in the state finals.
Matthew Choy / Grant Stenerson, Dunlap
The Sophomore duo went 2-2 in the 1A state final after fourth place in the division. Choy (37-14 in total) and Stenerson (29-11) were also twin champions in the Mid-Illini Conference tournament.
Carson Getz / Colin Sutherland, Notre Dame
Getz, junior, and Sutherland, senior, took second place in the Class 1A Dunlap cross section. They went on to find out where they went 3-2, advancing to the fourth round of the consolation round and finishing in the top 32.
Graham O’Leary / DougYoo, Dunlap
Yoo, junior, and sophomore O’Leary, set out to advance to the 3-2 state finals to take the second team all-state. They are in second place in the doubles match of the Mid-Illini Conference tournament.
Venil dating in Tummarakota, Dunlap
The senior (generally 24-12) and Eagles ’number one player of the entire season won the individual standings at home by beating final manager Brinkman 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. The Dark Slot finished 3-2 in the 1A state finals. He was ranked first in the first singles at the Mid-Illini Conference.
