England’s domestic reward bears fruit before lords run into Pakistan English cricket team

As England smelled of the 2015 World Cup, a choir followed, complaining that the T20 franchise was lacking in player development; this was the missing link, we were told. Four years later, the cricketers who rose to the summit under Eoin Morgan and the funds that show the depth of their ability below this week are ultimately the children of the 18-team T20 Blast and the Royal London Cup.

Many have broadened their horizons with Lions or in foreign competitions, no doubt. Let’s take Saqib Mahmood, who returned from Pakistan’s Super League this year healed with confidence and skills, before things are resolved at Sophia Gardens with a vibrant four-port screen. Even if English affairs go south, here Pakistan is not Sri Lanka, the 24-year-old has made a significant statement.

But all too often, English cricket doesn’t look inward when he gives credit. As Somersets Lewis Gregory said after sharing a new ball with Saqib and grabbing Mohammad Rizwan during a powerplay: There are a lot of guys who are grateful the county cricket gave them.

Gregory, who has played in PSL and Big Bash, continued: The standard for English cricket is very good, and I think you’ll see it in Blast and the Royal London competition. The only thing is, for the most part [overseas competitions] to see their national players play. [But] the standard compares to these other competitions, definitely.

The depth is also reflected in the back room staff. Alan Richardson will oversee England’s seamstresses for the first time this week and is a coach who is still just 46, but has been to five T20 final days and two London royal finals in Warwickshire and Worcestershire, with two awards to show. Head coach Chris Silverwood knew he was calling a banker.

English cricket will soon change with the arrival of a hundred, and it should be noted from the backroom staff that no British is the head coach in the men’s tournament. Through the platform, there are many redeeming features for the women’s game and some of the marketing and broadcast partnerships it has opened up. And the money spent suggests that it manages to fail (although paying live musicians more than many female players emphasize the inequality it claims to correct).

In addition to striving for a complex new format that is not played internationally in the hope that other countries will follow suit, the Hundred has elbowed the T20 explosion aside until June, while the Royal London Cup has hurt just under a quarter of its usual ability. It may well be that the pressure and profile of a 100-ball ball cricket only increases the skills of a white ball, but even evangelists here have to accept this is not a matter of course.

And as the packed Lords prepare to receive England’s one-day team for the first time since the 2019 World Cup final, and we wonder how at least 20 players ’eliminated national side can still put together a competitive XI, it’s worth remembering that both acts are reflections of the system that sat earlier. For better or worse, things are changing significantly.
