The Tokyo 2020 Olympics will host 33 sports and 339 medal events held at 42 locations across Japan.
The action begins on Wednesday, July 21 at the group events in the women’s soccer and softball competitions.
The 33rd Summer Games opening ceremony will be held at the Olympic Stadium on Friday, July 23, and the first medals will be won the next day.
The competition will run until Sunday, August 8, and the closing ceremony will be held later that day.
When are the 100-meter finals?
The women’s 100m final, hopefully accompanied by the British Dina Asher-Smith, will be held on Saturday 31 July at 13:50 BST, while the men’s 100m will be held the same day the next day.
Asher-Smith hopes to make it a golden double by winning the 200-meter final on Tuesday, August 3 at 13.50 BST.
How many gold medals will be won?
- There are 339 medal events – 34 gold will be won in the last day, which is the most games of all time during the games
- The first gold will be won in the women’s 10-meter air rifle race on Saturday, July 24th
- The final gold medal will be awarded to the winners of the men’s water polo final on Sunday, August 8th
- “Super Saturday” on July 31 includes 21 medal events, while “Golden Sunday,” the next day, is 25

What are the new sports?
Baseball and softball last appeared at the 2008 Olympics, but the other four sports are all making their debuts.
There are also two new disciplines in existing sports – 3×3 basketball and BMX freestyle – as well as new mixed teams in athletics, archery, judo, shooting, swimming, table tennis and triathlon.
