LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) A former footballer at the University of Kansas says the university offered him more than $ 50,000 in benefits if he left the program and remained silent about the harassment experienced by four other players on the team.
Caperton Humphrey said Kansas City Star that he received little help from school officials after reporting threats and harassment from his teammates.
Humphrey, who played in Kansas in 2017 and 2018 first on foot and later as a scholarship, said the feud he had with several of his teammates culminated in a clash between Humphrey and other players in his apartment when players threatened him, his father and his 15-year-old brother.
Humphrey said at some point in February 2019 that someone loosened the lock nuts on one of their tires enough to notice the tire swaying in their side mirror. Humphrey reported the incident to police, but no arrest was made because there was no evidence of who would loosen the nuts holding the bike.
Humphrey said he told university officials about the harassment and saw some other players sell drugs in the apartment building where they all lived. But former football coach Les Miles responded by suggesting players figure it out with each other in practice in full-contact practice.
The newspaper said Miles and former KU sports director Jeff Long did not respond to inquiries about this story, and KU compliance director David Reed and other KU athletics authorities declined to comment.
The Kansas City Star also contacted Humphrey’s four former teammates about his accusations. Two of them did not respond and two refused to comment. The newspaper did not nominate other former players.
Humphrey said the university eventually offered to pay his tuition and monthly fee of $ 1,289 if he took online KU classes at his home in West Virginia and agreed not to talk about what happened. The university also agreed to reimburse Humphrey for his trip from the university and to pay for sending his goods to him from Lawrence’s storage unit. The value of these items was just over $ 50,000.
Humphreys ’father, Jamie Humphrey, said his son has struggled with depression and started going to a psychiatrist since Lawrence’s time, and the family is considering a lawsuit against the university and officials involved.
