Former Hockey Olympics Naveed Alam dies in protracted battle with cancer

Former hockey Olympics and 1994 World Cup winning team member Naveed Alam has died, his daughter confirmed on Tuesday.

Alam had been diagnosed with blood cancer earlier this month.

Her daughter said she underwent chemotherapy last night at Shaukat Khanum Hospital in Lahore and her health deteriorated thereafter.

The daughter said she was transferred to an intensive care unit after her health deteriorated.

His family had revealed earlier this month that the former athlete had been feeling unwell for several days and had gone to Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital, where doctors found out about his illness.

Alam had asked the federal government to consider and provide the necessary assistance for his treatment, which was estimated to cost four million rupees.

Members of the Olympian Forum, where the 47-year-old was an active member, provided funding. Later, the Prime Minister of Punjab, Usman Buzdar, had stated that the Punam government would bear the cost of treating Alam.

Participants in the 1996 Summer Olympics coached teams from Pakistan, China and Bangladesh.

The Pakistan Hockey Association (PHF) said in a statement that Alam’s funeral is praying today (Tuesday) at 10pm at Company Bagh Sheikhupura.
