The Highlands welcomes a wave of new businesses in a year full of pandemic closures. If you’re driving on Baxter Avenue or Bardstown Road, you’ll likely see several new additions to the neighborhood, including Hi-Wire Brewing. The Asheville-based brewery recently hung its new sign on the side of the Baxter building. Owner Chris Frosaker said he was looking forward to joining the neighborhood. “When we first decided to look for a location in Louisville, the Highlands were number one on our list,” Frosaker said. Construction is currently underway in the faucet room and is expected to wrap up in the coming weeks. “The draft system and radiators have been installed. Everything is framed,” Frosaker said. you have 24 taps with 21 Hi-Wire beers and wine and cider on the tap. Frosaker said Hi-Wire is designed to provide a fun atmosphere, so games will be a big focus of the space. There is table tennis and foosball as well as football. “Think of playing billiards, but it’s a big soccer table on the ground. So it’s about 20 feet by 30 feet and you play billiards with your feet and footballs.” Frosaker said. Hi-Wire hopes to open its doors in the second week of August. Hi-Wire is not the only new company to move to Baxter. Last year, Goodfellas Pizzeria, based in Lexington, announced plans to open a Highland location to a first-floor retail space, but the project was suspended due to a pandemic. The owners tell WLKY that construction resumed three weeks ago and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. They hope to open sometime in January, and several other chains have also added locations to the Highlands. Insomnia Cookies recently opened another Louisville office at 948 Baxter Ave. The Green District brings its quick casual salad restaurant to the former Comfy Cow site on Bardstown Road and Eastern Parkway. . The space was empty for over a year. The historic former Highland Police Station and the BellSouth buildings on Bardstown Road and Rosewood Avenue will be converted into the Bellwether Hotel. Bellwether is billed as Louisville’s first invisible service hotel. It has 21 Art Deco-style rooms and is due to open in August. He hopes that this is just the beginning of the trend for new companies to choose the Highlands. “Hopefully Baxter will start to fill up, and several companies will feel confident and comfortable considering this, too,” Morris said.
