OU Football: Lincoln Riley, Sooners Leadership Emphasizes Off-Field Role in Increasing Pre-Sales | Sport

ARLINGTON, Texas Nik Bonitto smiled when asked at the Big 12 Media Days if the OU team could be one of the best gathered this year.

A non-Redshirt junior line player thinks the previous ones need to play at least one game before they can compete for the title, even though they may have the ability to get there. This offseason, Oklahoma is a pre-season media favorite to win its sixth consecutive Big 12 championship and favorite to earn a boat spot in the 2021 College Football Playoff. Even university football predictors chose Sooners to win the national championship.

Earlier in the day, head coach Lincoln Riley was asked if he thought 2021 would be a year when his team could click on the CFP losing streak and win the playoffs right away. Like Bonitto, now the Fifth Year responded with a smile before saying: This is Oklahoma every year is a year to do so.

With the uproar surrounding Sooners increasing throughout the start of conference media days across the country, the OU’s leap to win the CFP is not unreasonable. The Sooners finished last season’s eight-match winning streak, restored Heisman’s favorite as quarterback Spencer Rattler and praised the defense with Pro Football Focus No. 1 overall beneficiary Bonito.

Yet this pre-season has not been perfect for Oklahoma. While the Sooners offseason has had a lot of accolades, it also comes with a lot of distractions.

Because Trejan Bridges, Mikey Henderson, and Seth McGowan were allegedly fired from the April 15 robbery, they were fired from the program this offseason. The dismissal of Henderson and McGowans means Oklahoma will only return four running sides, while Bridges ’departure will leave the team without an even five-star wide receiver.

Sooners leaders are leaving for a season with as much outside noise as ever and want to focus on staying on the program.

They just made a mistake, and that mistake was handled by coach Riley, the red-shirt senior H-back Jeremiah Hall said of the separated Sooners. At the moment we are focusing on the guys we have (on the team). I lead costumes that are in the locker room right now and can best happen to the guys we lost.

Hall said he didn’t fully understand his leadership on the team until during this offseason. The conversation with Riley made him understand how he can pull his teammates together. Hall believes the OU has a strong culture maintained by players like Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts, and he wants to grow it further as he graduates.

Bonitto shares Halls ’belief in program culture, but admits he had some time to buy into it. Bonitto said that during the freshman season in 2018, he occasionally struggled with things outside the field. According to his head coach, Bonitto was on thin ice as the season progressed. But Bonitto had several conversations with family members and defensive coordinator Alex Grinch just a few months after work and managed to turn his career around.

You have to make sure you do the right stuff off the field, Bonitto said. Whether you go to classes, without interfering with tutoring or mentoring, it all starts with that. Once you get it together, you can start coming to the football field and be the song manager (and) playmaker.

I’m really not a very rah rah type, but I want to set an example in all these different aspects. If you don’t take care of yourself on the field, it will affect you on the field.

Riley knows his program culture is on the list of things he can master. Earlier, Rileys expressed support for the Black Lives Matter movement, its players the right to vote in the presidential election and vaccinations. He believes the Sooners remain among the best programs in the country and must hold themselves accountable every step of the way.

Whenever anything happens on our program with anyone, good, bad (or) in between, I always evaluate it and always take it into account, Riley said. I am always looking for healing. You always adapt over time.

Oklahoma opens its season on September 4 in New Orleans against Tulane.
