Penguins receive grant to launch hockey diversity program at Hunt Armory – CBS in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Penguins have been awarded a grant from the NHL and the National Hockey League Players ’Association to support the diversity of hockey and create access for the game’s colorful young players in the city’s suburbs.

Funding for the grant will come after the launch of the Penguins Willie O’Ree Academy event, and will focus on transforming Hunt Armory into an ice rink.

With the grant, it will promote a debate between Penguins, the city and urban rehabilitation activities on the construction of a seasonal hockey rink inside the 46,500-square-foot Hunt Armory in Shadyside.

This would become the first public field built within the city limits in decades.

The course runs from November to March and is the headquarters of the Penguins Hockey Diversity Program. It also includes new high school hockey training.

As the plans progress, the Penguins will support the cost of installing and operating the track and will not incur any cost to the public.

The penguins have been committed for decades to giving back to the Pittsburgh community, and we are now one of the leaders in the leagues ’efforts to improve the diversity of hockey games, and these investments and programs are at the heart of this mission, said Penguins CEO David Morehouse.

The penguins plan to hold a Thanksgiving field in Hunt Armory.

In the meantime, they are planning a community engagement this summer.

The Hunt Armory skating rink would provide a comprehensive and accelerated hockey course for the city’s youth, and is also open to public recreational skating.

In addition to youth hockey development plans, it will also operate at home for local programs, including Central Catholic High School, Chatham University, and a high school hockey program to be established with Sacred Heart Elementary School and Pittsburgh Public Schools.
