July 15 (Reuters) – Olympic medalist Angelique Kerber has become the latest big name to retire from July 23 to August 8. Eight Tokyo games, the German on Thursday saying that on tour in recent weeks had taken a toll on his body.
Three-time Grand Slam winner Kerber won a silver medal in the women’s singles in the 2016 Rio Games.
The 33-year-old has had a busy grass field season after competing in three tournaments in the past month – winning in Bad Homburg and reaching the semi-finals at Wimbledon.
“Representing Germany in London 2012 and Rio 2016 as part of a German team has always been one of my favorite memories of my career so far,” Kerber said in a statement.
“Because of this, I am even more disappointed that I accept the fact that my body needs rest after a few intense weeks that are behind and that I have to recover first before I return to the race later in the summer.
“Thank you for your support, because this has been a very difficult decision for me. Congratulations to all the German athletes in Tokyo, I miss you.”
