Surfing is ready to make a splash at the Olympics and move away from stereotypes | Tokyo Olympics 2020

AItalo Ferreira and Gabriel Medina of the finale of the last World Surf League Championship Tour (CT) season of the renowned Billabong Pipeline Masters in 2019 climbed to the finals to duel for the World Championship. It was a significant event. Paddling to the sparkling wine, clear water of Oahu, Hawaii, the two most notable Brazilian surfers of the moment received the biggest prize in the sport, reflecting the present and possible future of surfing. Formerly an American- and Australian-dominated sport, Brazil has both captured the men’s field as the center of the field today.

At the start of the race, it showed equally underrated and most intriguing aspects of competitive surfing. Medina, the two-time world champion, is known for his mental strength, but 10 seconds into the race, Medina tentatively retreated from the first wave as Ferreira swept forward and grabbed it for himself. He snorted down the side of the wave, turning steadily to the bottom before rising victorious from the end of it. The audience on the beach cheered. The tone was set. Ferreira was immediately self-confident and for the next 39 minutes, the restless Medina was unable to function well enough to prevent the first World Cup.

At its best, surfing is that personal competition is often won by those who choose their waves wisely, have a better understanding of the circumstances and can even intimidate opponents with their mere presence and never let them out of sight. It is also simply one of the highest athletic achievements in the sport. Surfers drive down water walls, rise from fallen barrels and sweep into the air, landing on the moving surface below. Enormous nuclear power, tree trunk legs, balance and power are all essential features.

When surfing arrives at the Olympics, the first question is simply whether it will work. Of all the places where surfing debuts at the Olympics, this place is hardly the ideal place to introduce the sport to the rest of the world. The smaller the wave, the less chance surfers have to demonstrate the full extent of their skills. Enter Tsurigasaki Beach, the venue for a surfing event in Chiba, about 40 miles from Tokyo, which is a well-known due to its low waves in summer.

There are also a few of the most difficult events to follow than surfing, which depends on the most unpredictable battlefields of all marine sports. Each day of competition requires the right conditions or else it will be postponed to another day. Competition days and broadcasts may take a seemingly endless hourly current with abundant dead time. In addition to their real opponents, surfers compete against the sea and even the subjective points of the judges, which can lead to unsatisfactory results.

And yet there is a lot of joy in watching the sport. One of the recent tensions has been a clear and steady improvement in women’s CT. The tour now offers equal prize money, and surfers are becoming more dynamic with their deepening talent. Progress was highlighted by Carissa Moore of Hawaii, the current dominant figure. In April, he started ventilation to the high sky, which became the first woman to perform such a movement in a race. As Moore squeezed his face in disbelief after landing, opponent Johanne Defay clapped out of the water.

Few characters are currently more absorbing than Medina, which is a clear picture of surfing in the last decade. His first World Championship in 2014 helped catalyze the rise of Brazilian surfing and his success has made him a superstar at home, reflected in his declining social media and close friendship with Neymar, but for others his relentless triumphant mentality has marked him a resident villain. His ruthlessness has led to cases all the way from the 2019 disruption dramas where he blocked the opponent taking a wave of race in deadly minutes for some comic eruptions earlier in his career.

Above all, however, the Medina is just a phenomenal surfer. He creates some the most amazing height in the air, but he is very well rounded in strength. At times, he seems to slow down time and produce continuous excellence from the abundant wave as enemies struggle to stay. His ability to produce continuously has been unmatched this year.

Quick guide

New Olympic Sports in Tokyo 2020

Show

Baseball and Softball

After returning to Beijing for the first time since 2008 and both sports find a willing audience in Japan where they are very popular. The men compete in baseball, where the field is within easy reach and reaches over 100 mph at a distance of 60 feet. The women compete in softball, where the field is in hand and reaches about 60 mph at just 40 feet. No British interest.

Karate

Born in Japan and held at Nippon Budokan, considered the spiritual home of martial arts. Kata, a solo series, sees athletes demonstrate their techniques alone. In rubber, they are rated on flights lasting three minutes in three different weight classes. No British interest.

Skateboarding

The skateboarding held at Ariake Urban Sports Park is divided into two divisions. The park is kept on a flat course, while there are obstacles on the street such as benches, stairs, rails and slopes. British interest Sky Brown and Bombette Martin, aged 13 and 14, compete in a park competition.

Sport climbing

Divided into three sections: boulders, speed and lead. According to Bouldering, athletes run multiple routes on as few attempts as possible, while at speed, two athletes go against the simple goal of getting to the top first. In the management team, the climbers ascend for six minutes and the winner is the person who ranks highest. British interest: Shauna Coxsey

Surfing

Surfing is held 40 miles from Tokyo on Tsurigasaki Beach and takes the form of a 30-minute start. Early rounds are considered as the start races for 4-5 competitors before later rounds become individual races. Surfers are judged by judges who give a score of 10 based on speed, strength and flow.

3×3 basketball

A more structured version of pickup basketball played at leisure around the world, teams of three players and one alternate compete in the midfield with one basket. They play up to 21 points, and the leading team wins if the game is not completed in 10 minutes. No British interest.

Thank you for the feedback.

Some are opposed to surfing as an Olympic sport because they see it as much more of a lifestyle than a competition, while others fear even more crowded beaches that could come out of all the growing popularity.

No matter what this Olympics represent to surfers and also to all new sports, there is an opportunity to show off their profession on the biggest stage, showing all the sportiness, skills, abilities and work needed for success, often obscured by outdated stereotypes in their sport.

Curious viewers get a glimpse of surfing for the first time and then get a chance to stay past the next two weeks. Time will tell if they do.
