Adam Peaty has warned his rivals that he is in such good shape that he could break his own world record in Tokyo when he wants to become the first British swimmer to maintain an Olympic victory.
Tokyo Tokyo’s largest golden banker team, which will begin its 100-meter breaststroke defense on Saturdays, is also warming that he feels liberated after the birth of his son George last year and is ready to attack the 56.88-second record.
It sounds very cliché, but I’m very obsessed with continuous improvement and constantly about what’s possible, Peaty said. I don’t want to quit my career and go I should have done it, or I should have done this. And while getting a world record is, of course, very, very difficult, it is never impossible. I think it will be within my reach if I get the preparations right over the next six days.
I wasn’t in my best form when I swam in the 57.66 European Championships. I still had my hairy mustache and I wasn’t mentally in those championships. But we have developed a lot of strength and power and relied a little since then. And I know I’ll grow by 10%, if not more Olympics.
So far, Peaty is clear of his rivals, as he has the top 20 times in history without anyone else breaking 58 seconds. And he hasn’t lost a 100-meter breaststroke competition in major competitions in more than seven years. So it is no surprise that he is sure that by preventing lightning or doing God, he will win again.
I think it’s just a byproduct of what I’ve been doing for the last seven years, he said. Without arrogance, if you’re as dominant as I am, I haven’t lost a great championship in 100m in a long time, it’s nice to go to games with this legacy. I have that performance history when it matters, and going to those games I’ve been released has been.
Let’s hope the lightning strike doesn’t hit me, he added. But anything can happen in sports. We all know that. And sometimes the big ones fall. But I think this Olympics is not yet my time. I just love competition, I love scrap. That’s why I swam. Because it gives me something I can’t get in a normal life.
Peaty also insisted that he remember what it was like to lose, and use the idea of defeat as motivation to push him forward. I play it in my head pretty much, I lost me, he said. I think I’ve got that healthy balance of thinking about what it’s like if I touch the second or third. But for me, these thoughts are suppressed when I compete. I have to be 110% confident in my own abilities.
And the 26-year-old also believes he will help make him feel more liberated than ever to become a father. I also think last year’s lock-up gave me that kind of second wind, he said. I always felt like charging, charging, charging, but now I can turn it off very easily. It may be related to having a child. I feel like I have more energy in running the camp because I don’t have a baby who screams or needs to be fed. It is also about the fact that we have little maturity last year.
Peaty also gave a nuanced and thoughtful response to those who doubted the continuation of the Olympics during the global pandemic.
That is a difficult question, he replied. You have to think about the people who live here. At the opposite end of the frequency are athletes who have been practicing for five years, every single day, getting up at 5 a.m. and going to bed with half a dozen screaming babies. They commit their entire lives to this three-week event. You will never get the right answer.
I’m biased because I want them to happen, I want to compete. But I can know those who don’t want games to happen at all. For me, I’m double vaccinated. I have taken every step to make sure I am not going to spread it to anyone else if I had it. I wear double masks. That’s all I can do. Some athletes are coming here without vaccinations. You have to ask them the same question. Unfortunately, that is not easy to answer.
