The Arizona Coyotes hockey development team visited the Land of Enchantment over the weekend to help grow hockey. “We saw the numbers in New Mexico and they started to rise in youth hockey and suddenly they took a dip,” said Zach Izumi, Coyotes ’grassroots marketing manager. “We didn’t understand why, so we’re kind of here trying to figure it out and we feel like we can really increase the amount of young people’s hockey here.” Coyotes share time in both Santa Fe and Rio Rancho, hosting two separate clinics on Friday and Saturday. on Friday the event was “Street Hockey 101 with Howler” while Saturday was “Try Hockey for Free Day”. KOAT 7 Sports visited the McDermott Sports Center in Rio Rancho on Friday. “It’s just kind of getting more kids with hockey sticks in their hands,” Izumi said. “We feel like kids really don’t get a chance to play hockey these days, and we’re just trying to spread the word about hockey.”
