I know I’m not alone when I say that Mel Tucker’s lease of Chris Kapilovic last year was one of my favorites. Michigan State football needed a lot of offensive bus help and he was the right man for the job.
For years, the state of Michigan had a strong line of attack, but then it declined in Mark Dantonion’s final seasons. It rose from producing NFL talents like Jack Conklin, Donavon Clark, Brian Allen and Jack Allen to one of the worst units in college football in a few years.
The recession was felt strongly in the attack, when the Spartans did not produce 1,000 yards of rusheres, the quarterback always ran for their lives (Brian Lewerke), and it placed near the bottom of the Big Ten in yards and scoring for years. Around 2018-2020, the state of Michigan had one of the worst crimes in the country.
Kapilovic hopes to change that and what he’s back in 2021 is fascinating.
Michigan State’s second-year offensive line coach includes AJ Arcuri, JD Duplain, Blake Bueter, Nick Samac, Matt Carrick, Matt Allen and Kevin Jarvis, all back with start-up experience, and he brings Arkansas State transfer Jarrett Horst, who 247Sports ranked among the country’s 150 most popular transfers in 2021.
Geno VanDeMark, Ethan Boyd, Brandon Baldwin and Kevin Wigenton will also come into the 2021 class as a solid group to add Dallas to Fincher in the 2020 class and Spencer Brown from 2019.
Talent exists.
Kapilovic has a chance to make magic for Michigan State football
While the talent does exist, the coaching hadn’t been exactly where it was needed for a few years before the new staff got to East Lansing, and this is the perfect opportunity for Kapilovic to do the magic. If he turns this unit into one of the top ten in 2021, he deserves all the praise.
Because if Michigan’s line of attack improves drastically where it has been since about 2016, Spartans could end up in violation at the top of Big Ten as well.
All success passes through the line of attack. The running game has pieces with Kenneth Walker III, Elijah Collins, Jordon Simmons and Harold Joiner, and the attack must be solid in the middle of either Anthony Russo or Payton Thorne and Jayden Reed, Ricky White, Jalen Nailor, Tre Mosley, CJ Hayes, Ian Stewart, Christian Fitzpatrick, Kameron Allen, Trenton Gillison, Terry Lockett and Maliq Carr.
If the attacking line improves, the pieces will be in place for MSU to have a lot of success.
