Coco Gauff left the Olympics because of a positive COVID test: What does this mean for the US team?

Coco Gauff, a 17-year-old U.S. tennis star, is not on his way to Tokyo to compete in the 2021 Olympics.

On Sunday, Gauff, the world’s 23rd player, shared on Twitter that his test was positive for COVID-19.

“I have always had the dream of representing the United States at the Olympics, and I hope I still have a lot of opportunities to make it happen in the future. I want to wish TEAM USA good luck and safe games for every Olympics and the entire Olympic family,” Gauff wrote in the message.

News of Gauff’s positive test comes only a day after the Olympics announced the Olympic village athlete is positive for the coronavirus.

The U.S. Olympics list now includes number 15 Jennifer Brady, No. 27 Jessica Pegula and No. 35 Alison Riske with singles Nicole Melichar and Bethanie Mattek-Sands. The highest-ranked women in the U.S., Sofia Ken and Serena Williams, chose not to play.

In a similar situation, Australia lost one of its best tennis players when Alex de Minaur had to withdraw after a positive COVID-19 test. Australia did not replace him on the doubles list, but brought Max Purcell to the list to join John Peers in the doubles.

In just a few days, the U.S. team will now have to figure out its doubling situation. Brady, Pegula and Riske are the team’s doubles representatives. Gauff was also paired with Melichar in pair situations and Pegula is currently being reconciled with Mattek-Sands; Brady or Riske could take a pair with Melichar in a doubles match if the United States is unable to replace Gauffb before the games begin. Brady is the world’s double-player 66, while Riske is 35.
