Release
- Together, Amazon, Facebook and Google earn more than $ 112 billion in advertising revenue
- Two-thirds of U.S. advertising is now digital
3 companies now account for 50% of U.S. advertising revenue
Every year in the United States, CFOs and marketing executives meet to allocate a portion of a company’s funds to advertising budgets. Today, on average, more than half of those U.S. advertising dollars end up in the deep pockets of just three technical stocks on Amazon, Google, and Facebook.
The ad landscape becomes unknown. Today’s data takes a closer look at U.S. annual advertising dollars, where Big Tech stocks continue to rise.
Advertising dollars in 2020
The United States is home to some of the largest advertisers in the world. Despite the decline caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. advertising spending was slightly more than $ 225 billion in 2020.
Big Tech’s advertising triopoly was roughly achieved $ 120 billion from this and take more market share every year. One reason for this is the industry’s movement toward digital advertising, which now makes up almost two thirds of the of all advertising spend.
Likely competitor
Big Tech stocks like Google and Facebook are well-known pure plays in ad space. However, the inclusion of the Amazon may come as a surprise. Amazon, typically known for its e-commerce business, is now also doing more than that $ 16 billion advertising revenue annually.
But that was not always the case. Before 2015, digital advertising space was a duopoly consisting only of Facebook and Google. At the time, Amazon’s advertising revenue was relatively small, totaling less than $ 1 billion.
Keeps a closer eye on these ad revenues over time:
| Year | Advertising revenue ($ B) | % Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2022P | $ 20.07 | 23% |
| 2021P | $ 16.32 | 28% |
| 2020 | $ 12.75 | 23% |
| 2019 | $ 10.32 | 39% |
| 2018 | $ 7.41 | 122% |
If these trends serve as an indication, advertising budgets will only become more digital, and the advertising triopoly will continue to determine a larger share over time.
