Cricket’s popularity has risen in recent years, fueled by the international success of Irish teams, and now the sport is branching out into a new area once dominated by the likes of the GAA and football.
In Tyrrelstown, Dublin 15, the next generation will receive batting exercises in the summer sun as part of a new cricket development program supported by a diverse community of regions.
Tyrrelstown cricket development coach Mitchell Thompson told the local Asian community area.
This has also encouraged Irish people to start the sport, he said.
The program was conducted through the Fingal Provincial Government Sports Office in collaboration with Cricket Leinster.

Mr. Thompson visits weekly local schools during training sessions to develop the popularity of youth sports. The school has a great mix of nationalities, and they all play sports together, he said.
Gerry Spollen, Sports Coordinator at Tyrrelstown Educate Together NS, also feels that the diversity of the local population has helped increase the popularity of the sport.
Our school is quite diverse; we have a different background, so people are interested in different sports and have brought it with them to the area.

Kids love it, it’s great to see them outdoors and enjoying, especially at this age when there’s so much show time. Mr Spollen said.
Mr Thompson said the improvement for some children was huge when they returned to play after the lock.
I hope some join the local club in Tyrrelstown.
Bran ORourke, Fingals cricket development director at Cricket Leinster, said it is now the third most popular sport behind basketball and the GAA.
Tyrrelstown’s leading community coach was a clear step we had to take to respond to the growing cricket culture in the area.
The investment by Fingal County Councils with their cricket cravings is a great example of how the council can help sport grow in the community, he said.
