Ben Stokes hopes the hundred can provide more opportunities for women’s cricket to grow, but also attract a larger and more diverse audience to the sport.

Versatile is also excited about the start of the tournament and the opening match of the Northern Superchargers against Welsh Fire 24. July, live on Sky Sports.

The 30-year-old believes a hundred can take advantage of the work done by the Cricket Commission of England and Wales (ECB), leveraging the momentum of two domestic World Cups in 2017 and 2019, and bring the game to new supporters.

“One of the main goals of this is to get new eyes and ears for cricket,” Stokes said Sky Sports news.

“We’ve done some great things from the men’s and women’s teams over the last couple of years to attract a wider audience. Hopefully a hundred can do the same.

“I find it massive (for women) to play with us in the first competition. You have seen in India where they also have their own franchise (women) competition.

“The more we can grow the women’s game, I think it not only offers them a great opportunity, but also opens its window to a larger and wider audience.”

The start of Hundred, which kicks off live on Sky Sports on Wednesday, will accept small rule changes from more established game formats.

Stokes – named in the English test group in the Indian series for the broken finger of his recovery in August – is convinced that adapting to the new shape will not become too fiscal.

“I think the principle is still a game of bat and ball,” Stokes added.

“The only thing we just need to be well aware of is that it’s not as simple as it normally is for us because it’s a new form.

“Once you’ve got more than five balls from each bowler, 10 balls at the other end, the rest take care of themselves.

“I think just organizing a new competition with new rules is in itself exciting.”
