Olympic champion Piper ranks among the women’s teams in Canadian hockey

Piper joins Hockey Canada, which has served as the High Performance Technical Director of the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA) since 2014.

She is responsible for scouting and all evaluation and selection for Canadian women’s hockey teams.

Working with club teams to help coaches develop players is also part of Piper’s job.

The striker was part of the Canadian teams that won gold at the Salt Lake City 2002, Turin 2006 and Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.

She also helped the country win the International Hockey Federation (IIHF) Women’s World Championships in 2004, and she was still in second place.

Forty goals and 78 assists in 111 matches in 2001–2011 placed the national team tenth in the all-time scoring.

Piper also brings a role experience as assistant coach with Markham Thunder from the Canadian Women’s Hockey League, where he helped the team reach the Clarkson Cup semi-finals in 2018-2019.

“Cheries’ knowledge and expertise in working with high-performance athletes with OWHA has been essential to the development of Ontario-based athletes, and we know he brings his extensive expertise to the national level to help our athletes and teams succeed on the international stage.”

In May, Hockey Canada announced the coaches of the Canadian women’s hockey team at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, led by Troy Ryan.

It also revealed 28 players involved in its preparation for the Calgary Games.

Prior to that, Calgary hosted the IIHF Women’s World Cup in August.
