Cricket season in full swing on Campbell River – Campbell River Mirror

The cricket season is in full swing for the Campbell River Cricket Club.

On July 10, two fascinating cricket competitions were played on Tsar’s playing fields. The first match was the introduction of cricket to six new players who had never or rarely played the game before. This match was questioned in an exciting six-sided form that allows each player to hit a bat and a bowl. Newcomers Dana Dunsmore, Kelsey Leigh, Mike Bradley, Ray Wilson, Bob Jacques and Brent Lamour were mixed with regular club members to get two evenly matched sides.

Team Heenatigala fought first and set a challenging 78 run for Team Jepson to chase. The highlights of this inning were an exciting opening partnership with Bates and Leigh. Scoring 41 hit just 20 balls, and Dunsmore’s bowling, which, despite never having bowled before, showed how brilliantly versatile an athlete he was by taking three gates and not letting any run down his 15 bowling balls.

The opening pair of Side Jepson, Wilson and Jaques was limited to just 11 runs with tight bowling by Pomeroy and Leigh, who also captured his first gate. Dunsmore and Lamour carried the score in 31 runs, including two massive sixes from Dunsmore, leaving the last pair of Jepson and Farmer scoring 47 to win the match. In the last five balls clawed, Jepson managed to get 20 runs, which took his team past Team Heenatigala by a two-run margin.

Four new players then joined CRCC’s regular players for an intra-club match. Two strong teams took the field for a complete 11-a-side 30 over match, which proved even more controversial than the previous one. Beat first team O’Shannessy set a tough goal in 180 runs over 30 matches. Simon Deller and Aaron O’Shannessy both got half a century and Dunsmore continued their previous success by hitting another six off one of the club’s regular balls.

After a steady start, the club president’s team found it was clearly behind after the required six runs / running speeds. With only seven surpluses left, 80 more runs are needed when Jepson and Gabby Mason came to hit. This pair began collecting fast runs until debutant Dunsmore bowled Jepson. Adam Panziera joined Mason on a seemingly impossible task, making 31 points for the last 12 balls. This was reduced so that the last six balls were needed to equalize the match. Amazingly, Panziera managed to knock six out of the last ball, and as the referee judged the ball to be a high delivery, one bonus run was obtained, leading to a one-round win.

The new players quickly adapted to the game, and we hope they all continue to play regular cricket for the club after having tasted the sport. We are especially pleased that Dunsmore and Leigh, two female players, are joining the game. We’re hosting a club family day in Carih on Aug. 15 with two female teams playing at 10 a.m. before the club hosts its annual Salty’s Six-a-side tournament from noon onwards.

Our next competitive trip home to Carih is on July 24, when the Masters team will play against the visiting Masters side from Cowichan, where teams will begin the battle for the annual Joe’s Pharmacy Challenge Cup. This game starts at noon.

Over the weekend of July 17, the Campbell River Second XI men’s cricket team made the trip to Metchosin Cricket Ground to play against the local side. Captain Jos Bell was lucky to have such a versatile bowling attack with really intense bowling at Gabby Mason and Tharuka Jayalath.

Pure speed complements were our three spin bowls, Jimmy Stephen, Aadil Dhansay and Rahul Reddy. This bowling style is a real art and it resembles ball presses in baseball.

Captain Bell brought himself on a few trips late in the inning and asked for 2 gates for just 7 runs. The man of the hour was Mike Smith, who made an unbeatable 77 and led the first innings of the Metchosin Cricket Club 229.

Opening hackers Aaron O’Shannessy and Adam Panziera set out to chip in with an increase of 60 between them.

Next was the match man Justin Black, who has played less than half a dozen games in his life. He shocked everyone, including himself, by getting 99 points.

Many players and spectators commented that his inning was one of the most enjoyable to watch, characterized by a punch of power and an innovative punching game.

The highlights were his huge hits that descended on fences in neighboring countries and the square of a nearby farmer. This sensational inning, along with the late cameos of Rahul Reddy and Jos Bell, helped the CRCC win comfortably. Many thanks to Metchos Cricket Club for hosting the CRCC, which surpassed and made guests comfortable by providing an abundance of post-match BBQ and drinks that limited a great competitive but enjoyable cricket day.
