CHARLOTTE Kamarro Edmonds has been working continuously. Gabe Stephens has done extra sprints and push-ups after the workouts. And Trevion Stevenson has blown up Tomon Foxs phone.
When it comes to UNC football summer sign-ups, seven 2021 classes committed to the team in June and didn’t sign up in early January. The extra work has been the name of the game.
And two UNC veteran defenders have taken note.
I don’t think I’ve ever been among so many freshmen who are so eager and so willing to learn a playbook, senior linebacker Jeremiah Gemmel said at an ACC Football Kickoff event on Wednesdays.
They get it faster than I came in, sequel director Fox added with a laugh. And they always talk to either me or the other old ends of the room, trying to find ways to heal.

The UNC completed its 2021 recruitment cycle for ACC No. 3 and Nation Class 14, per 247Sports combined rankings, and welcomed 12 of these 19 signed to Chapel Hill in January for classes, an extensive spring training circuit in March and a nationwide televised spring game in April.
Not surprisingly, early entrants such as linebacker Power Echols, quarterback Drake Maye and defensive lineman Keeshawn Silver are foot up for June entrants as Tar Heels approaches the playoffs.
But they’re caught up and the summer will give them a great opportunity to do so, head coach Mack Brown said earlier this month at a news conference and added that hed will recruit them all over again.
Among the newcomers to the UN summer are five four-star recruitments that could provide immediate depth to their position: former Havelock run back to Edmonds, former Mountain Island Charter player Stephens, former South Mecklenburg tight end Bryson Nesbit and the Tennessee offensive battle of Eli Sutton.
The team also includes three three-star recruiters: Virginia linebacker Stevenson, Florida corner player Dontae Balfour and a former ubiquitous Jacksonville athlete. Tymir Brown.
Just watching them train in the summer, they’re really talented, Brown said.

Enrolled in the summer of 2016 and 2017, Fox and Gemmel know how daunting it can be for such players to enter the program and know they are lagging behind their peers in terms of playingbook identification.
In the linebackers room, however, it has not been an obstacle. Its only pushed Stephens and Stevenson, two Fox and Gemmel who signed up for the summer, have worked hard to make up for the most lost time.
That kid is one of the hardest jobs I’ve come across, Fox said of Stevenson. Early on, he probably wrote to me every day or twice a day, talking: Are you trying to hit the field? Are you trying to hit the printing house? and Gabe, he’s doing really well, too. He takes the playbook very fluently.
On defense, Gemmel said he watched Balfour and Brown flashing their natural cover-ups and scattering tons of balls this summer in player-led practices. During the run, he looked at the bulldozer, Chucky-doll-toting Edmonds make the Kenan Stadium printing room their second home.
What sets you apart from all seven of your new freshman teammates when the 2021 season kicks off?
How hard they work, Gemmel said. They go to the movie room, and sometimes when they’re ready to work, they even go to the field to get a couple of sprints or push-ups in. I think they know they missed spring ball, so they work a lot harder to catch up.
