NORMAL (HOI) – Normal Community High School honors the longtime coach by naming the football field after him.
The Unit 5 school board on Wednesday night approved the renaming of the venue for Dick Tharp Field, honoring Ironmen’s head coach from 1968-1988.
Tharp’s 158 wins are the highest in school history. During that time, Tharp directed Ironmen to eight playoffs. In 1974, his team was second in Class 4A in the playoffs of the Illinois High School.
Unit 5 says the cost of the change comes from private donations. According to current plans, the renaming will take place during the fall football season.
