The British Grand Prix review crashed Red Bull into 1.3 million, Christian Horner says

The fall of Max Verstappen with Lewis Hamilton in the British Grand Prix cost Red Bull at least $ 1.8 million (€ 1.3 million), says team manager Christian Horner.

Horner said the loss “will have huge consequences” for this season.

Costs can affect Red Bull’s ability to bring performance improvements to its car, among other costs.

The figure is the best early estimate of car repair, and it may still rise – Red Bull is still investigating whether a monochrome can be repaired or replaced.

Top teams like Red Bull are already struggling to reach the budget limit – the limit is about half of the previous annual consumption for teams like Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari. The extra cost like this makes it even more challenging.

Engine partner Honda has not yet revealed whether the engine can be saved. If that fails, Verstappen will need a new one and will almost certainly exceed the number of engine parts allowed for the season, in which case he will receive a net penalty in the race later in the season.

Hamilton won the UK Grand Prix despite being given a 10-second penalty for being judged “primarily guilty” by the hostess.

Together with Verstappen’s retirement, this meant that the Mercedes driver reduced Verstappen’s championship before the race from 32 points to eight.

Horner said the team “felt at the time and still feels that Hamilton was given a light punishment for this type of event.”

He added that Red Bull was still considering whether to try to take the matter forward in an attempt to increase Hamilton’s punishment.

“Given the seriousness of the incident and the mild penalty, we will review all information and have the right to request a review,” Horner said. “That’s why we’re still looking at the evidence and considering all sports options.”

Horner said Verstappen and the team had decided to try to make up for their championship damage in the next Hungarian race on August 1st.

“We are all motivated to maintain the championship leadership,” Horner said.

“Max doesn’t linger at all with Silverstone and wants to talk on the track. He’s determined to put this event behind him and use it as a motivator for the rest of the season, like us.”

He added: “I would like to respond to some of the comments I have seen from Toto [Wolff, the Mercedes F1 boss], who is said to comment on the accident that caused Hamilton, were so personal.

“I would like to make it clear – this had happened on the track between two of the best drivers in the world.

“At a time when the driver is in the hospital and the extent of the injuries has not yet been determined, the car has been recorded and the housekeepers have punished the driver who is held responsible, it is natural that emotions come into play for all parties whether you feel wrong or a winner.

“I also felt that the report that Max was‘ too aggressive ’at that point was unfounded.

“All you have to do is look at the fact that Max has zero penalty points on his license and he hasn’t been found guilty of any track misconduct in recent years.

“The aggressive 17-year-old F1 newcomer Max Verstappen, to whom Hamilton refers, is not Max Verstappen today, just as Hamilton is not the same driver as he started the sport.

“Both drivers are of course uncompromising in their driving style, but both are very professional and have a lot of experience.

“The reality is that Hamilton has met his match in a competitive car, and I agree that both drivers have to show respect for each other, but Hamilton was the striker on Sunday.”
